Disagree. One of the strong points of the genre are the characters and the setting. Through them, you can discover many new philosophies of life and world views. If you are willing to empathize, it can definitely be more enriching than whatever "deep" thoughts you can find in different genres. Of course, it helps if there is some kind of an overreaching plot to complement the show, but it's not necessary.
I have to admit that if the characters' only personality trait is acting as "cute" as possible, the genre loses one of its most prominent values. For that reason, I'm not a big fan of moe, but not every SoL fits that description, just like not all the non-SoL shows are battle shounen.

I was going to read Aria, so I started with Aqua, but thought it was thoroughly mediocre and it gave me no desire to move onto Aria. It's a shame too because I like the kinds of sci-fi slice of life stuff that Aria seems to be associated with anywhere I look. It didn't seem that similar though. Unless Aqua is completely different from Aria, but I doubt it.

I don't dislike slice of life anime. It's good to turn on if you're suffering from insomnia.

SoL in theory should be some of the best at atmosphere and characterization. In practice most SoL is just your usual cliches with even less ambition than the average battle shounen. Just because it is slow does not mean it is thoughtful.

Really, if you've seen a few slice of life shows, you've seen them all. A lot of people start to dislike the genre because it's pretty much the same shit rehashed over and over again. Now this is true for any genre in general, but it's worse for SoL because the entire genre is just a rehash of what goes on in people's everday lives, which, like, really boring.

Try Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. I didn't like Aria either.

As for me, both Aria and YKK are one of my favorites. They are similar in portraying the mono no aware, but I admit each does it in a different way. YKK is more melancholic and its world evokes a sense of solitude. That's something I appreciate a lot.

The same way that during lot of time we had very few fantasy shows and now we get a ton each season thanks to isekai, and it caused the same effect.

Or how at some point everyone hated classic harems and now when something like pic related or quintuplets is released gets released it has a good acceptation, because right now there is no saturation of that kind of show.

Well, Aria took a while to grow on me, because it focuses on introducing the setting first, then on the world and its many mysteries and finally on the characters and their growth which is admittedly the best part. It is deliberate and makes things more impactful in the end, but the downside is you only really appreciate it in the end. I mean, I did enjoy pretty much everything about it, but it definitely didn't start as one of my favorites, it got there later.
There are many similar themes with YKK, but each does it a bit differently, for example:
Both Alpha and Akari have cheerful personalities, can appreciate the little things in life etc. , but Alpha does it in a more mature and detached way, Akari does it with childish curiosity
Both focus on the "mono no aware", the transience of things. But in YKK, Alpha remains the same and is a passive observer. In Aria, the characters themselves change while the world largely remains the same.
Both introduce some mysteries to the setting, in YKK, it's the nature remembering humanity (the human shaped mushrooms, streetlamp trees), in Aria, it's the Neo Venezia's 7 mysteries.

I could probably think of some more if I wanted, but you can probably get the gist of it.

I for instance like getting 9-10 hours of "sleep", but the actual time of me being asleep is probably more like 7-8 hours. But if the time you're in bed to the time you wake up is 8 hours you're not getting 8 hours of sleep, and maybe not even 7 hours.

SoL movies aren't even a thing in the american culture. Most of the highest grossing films are literal fairy tales. Making money isn't exactly a great factor to determine what adults enjoy, because the businness is mostly targeted at kids and young adults, the other ones will accompany their kid to see them anyway.
If I look at an average joe, he probably likes some kind of action movies, historical movies, perhaps romance, comedy... the last ones have a lot of SoL elements. I come from a bit different culture and one of our best rated movies could be even considered pure SoL. They simply portray the lives and struggles of people during communism among other things. I'm just trying to put things into perspective.
