Don't fall for the television bait
>Don't tell L you have access to police files
>Light wins
L would've asspulled something else in that case.
An honest question is: How do you even get caught. Let's say, right now, I start writing down the names of Liberal world leaders, George Soros and activists I don't like. They all die of heart attacks.
You are a member of an International task force, hurriedly put together to investigate these deaths. You don't know the Death Nite exists.
Where do you start?
>Where do you start?
Did you even watch the anime? You do what L does and start throwing random lines out in very specific locations where you think the perpetrator is located and hope he bites. Not like you're guaranteed to get him, but it's the best you have.L's plan may seem dumb as OP insinuates, but the general idea is the best tool that's available. Besides Light raging over being called out is a character defining moment where Light the human has been subsumed by Kira the god. And Kira is a jealous god.
That's even a plot point early on, L says that his entire hunch depended on Light being childish in the first half of the series and challenging him at every stupid thing. As it turns out 17 year old seniors are arrogant pricks who think they know everything.
Realistically the only chance you have of catching someone with a Death Note is for when they fuck up and then trying to get them to do something really stupid under false pretenses so you can narrow it down; if someone killed completely randomly, and only used information that was available worldwide in several languages you'd pretty much have nothing to go on until they narrowed it down; if you're not an idiot and use the Death Note like Light did later in the series via abusing accidental deaths and that he can have people be killed much later after it's written, you're pretty much impossible to catch.
For that example if you only targeted political left wing individuals, you've already given them a start in that it is likely the killer would be someone with an opposite political view, probably radical, and then it's just a crapshoot of trying to narrow it down from there, likely starting with whatever area the deaths are most likely to affect.
Why did he fucking kill that FBI agent, why? what a fucking idiot
Be task forcforce.
People inextricably dying. Medical oddity.
No signs of immediate assassinations.
Do inventory of what they consumed, locations went to, people met, etc. Come up with no connection.
Look at the type of people they were.
See the "liberal" connection.
See that they are mostly known to the english western world.
Search the type of person who would know these people and would be upset to see them dead.
Have a basic outline of a person - probably narrows it down to million people.
Get enforcement to tap all these peoples communications, hack all camera and microphones. Scan via computer for keywords. See if they searched for the victims online.
IF suspects not found at this point, do what L did. County by county broadcast and bait the killer. If baited, we know what region they are in. And apply the suspect model and pick up who we can. Intensify surveillance, focus on that region, etc. Apply pressure so they make a mistake.
L has mary sue detective powers, that's really the only reason he pinpointed Light in the first place. In the real world, there's just no way anyone could trace that shit back to Light. Serial killers like the fucking Zodiac Killer were never caught, and that guy actually had to go out to kill and risk possibly getting caught. Light has no fucking risks when he uses the Death Note.
Light is an angry child who wants to kill anyone who thinks he is wrong.
