Everything up to the end of Z is charming, well executed, simple shounen. The Buu arc does start to flounder a bit, but overall it's still a fun ride. Everything after Z is just an embarrassing mess though.

Somewhat related but I need some help on something. One Cell turns Perfect he becomes a lot like Frieza which I think many acknowledge. But I feel like there's a difference in there, it's pretty noticeable when I watch some of the FighterZ interactions. I can't really put my finger on it, is he haughtier? Smarmier? I can't tell exactly.

The manga is much better than the anime, and doesn't suffer from the same problems of pacing, filler content, etc.

It's better than your favorite show by a country mile.

It was one of the first, so it can be excused for it's flaws.
Basically all shonen after Dragonball are using the same formula, it was groundbreaking.

Things i really like:
>no female fighters
>fights are gritty and unpredictable, especially in the Freiza and Android saga
>Vegeta's personality, one of the best things about the show
>emphasis on training

And it suffered from some severe pitfalls, which all shonen walking in it's footsteps have also struggled with:
>power scaling out of control
>thing established in the beginning are forgotten, glossed over
>unwillingness to kill off anyone in the later sagas
>plot grows repetitive over time, loses it's veneer

The series peak in the 22nd tenkaichi budokai and only got less and less plot focused. Everything from the frieza arc and the cell arc is trash

>fights are nothing but a series of power up with little to no strategy, typically going from character x stomping character y until character y gets a power up and start stomping character x
>most of the most memorable moment are filler or complete shit when properly analyze, Gohan being forced into the MC role after being completely irrelevant for most of the arc being example
even at their worst mediocre series like Bleach or Naruto are much better than dragon ball at his best
