The cayenne powder in Conan's underwear was just cunty bullying, and she was always a bitch towards Ran for no legitimate reason despite Ran always treating her with kindness.
Her behavior in DR was inexcusable though, that was just cruel.

I think she was being manipulative on purpose because she couldn't stand the thought of Conan revealing his identity to Ran and having to watch the two of them interact as lovers while still in his Conan form. "Rude" is an understatement though, tricking someone who is recovering in the hospital from a nearly fatal wound into thinking his loved ones are dead is shitty no matter what excuses she makes to justify it.

Everyone's already set out a specific outlet, it'd be harder to become the secondary translator when what I can tell for the most part they do good enough to get by and become the primary translators. I think the best thing to do is keep an eye on their work and toss a few notes their way. It is a nice idea to do your own I just don't know how it'd fare.

I think more competition and choices wouldn't be a bad thing. The BSI and Korn scans have issues with accuracy and poor English, while the Viz editions suffer from censorship and over-localization. There isn't a really good version of the manga in English whether official or unofficial unfortunately.
Speaking of which, I read Viz's edition of vol. 71 that came out yesterday. While I generally like their version of the manga and find it superior to existing scanlations, I keep noticing lines that are off. It seems like some lines get changed in order to fit in the bubbles, but sometimes lines are changed for no obvious reason. I wonder if the editor may not know Japanese, and maybe during the process of making the dialogue sound more natural in English, they veer too far off from the original meaning.
Where Viz shines is in their idiomatic and grammatically correct dialogue, beyond what most scanlators can manage, even the native speakers. That's a weak point for me too, and I struggle to make my translated dialogue sound that natural, while trying to keep a balance with accuracy. On the other hand, they don't do a good job of distinguishing between different characters and their distinctive speech styles, but most scanlators don't bother to do that either.

I don't only mean for dialects. (And personally, I don't think southern is the best analogue for Osaka dialect. Some variety of NYC English fits the stereotypes better in my opinion. But I guess there are limited options when writing in a US English context.) But I think they should try to distinguish more between the speech styles that reflect personality. Viz makes everyone sound pretty much the same, and the breezy style they go for works well for the girls but not so much for some of the guys like Shinichi/Conan or Kogoro who originally speak in a coarser way. I think it's possible to use subtle means to convey these differences.
Here's one example that stuck in my mind. Conan's dialogue in the top panel makes an impact in Japanese because he suddenly switches from the softer speech style he uses as Conan (which happens to be very similar to how Eisuke normally speaks) into the masculine adult language he uses as Shinichi when talking informally. To use "please" there is inappropriate; he isn't pleading, but threatening.
