What is anime of the decade?
I think it needs to have a balance between quality and popularity if we'll ever come close to agreeing on something.

AOTD 90s is obviously, undeniably, Neon Genesis Evangelion. For the 00s, it's maybe a bit less clear, but a clear candidate is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

What would fulfill the conditions of the 2010s? Personally I may be leaning to Madoka, but I'm not certain.

We had a lot of good shows in the first half, specially in 2011 and 2012.

S;G, Haruhi film, Madoka, Fate/Zero, Usagi Drop, AnoHana, Sakamichi no Apollon, and some others.

Those are all good candidates, in my opinion.

Recently, we didn't have that many. We had a few good shows like Yuru Camp, Yama no Susume, Non Non Biyori, Antartica, Kimi no Na Wa, Koe no Katachi and such, but I don't feel they deserve this title.

Stein's gate panders hard to the half-wit masses idea of being a nerd, giving it a pass. Okabe barely has any character beyond "HAHAHA Look at me I'm a giant attention whore but it's ok cause I'm QUIRKY xD" and what little is there is just I need to save my retard waifu written so sloppily it makes Maeda look like Hemingway. All the other characters are just JRPG /q/uest givers and have almost no relevance to the plot. Their cheap characterizations reflect that, having nothing to them outside of their tropes.

For a show that like to spew a lot about /sci/ence, it's not very logical. Everything only works conveniently to neatly fit what the plot demands, further complications are completely ignored. The ending is an asspull that wasn't built up at all and it's never explained why Okabe has the reading steiner. The romance is completely forced and feels like it only happened because he's the mc logic so of course the girl who has it all and can be any guy she wants has to end up with him. Got to to fulfill that fantasy.

I'd disagree. While it doesn't "push boundaries", its referencing of classic animators and directors (such as the sequences in Exodus/Andes Chucky) and the way in which they push MusAni out of their slump is absolutely fantastic and very original.

I also loath it, but you can't really deny its influence. AOTD should be reserved for anime that could represent the whole decade, not your personal favorite.

Well for one it single handedly revived the mahou shoujo genre. Kinda like how sao spearheaded the wave of isekai in anime we see today.

Animation and art style should be relevant to the story or setting. Madoka has psychedelic art sequences to match the setting inside the portal, Katanagatari uses cel shading and stills in combat to show how bareknuckle Kyotouryuu is, etc. Shirobako is a story about toughing out the industry and so uses the industry standard of animation to put you right in its environment. It remains great by virtue of the very concept of animation itself being used as the central storytelling element, meaning the viewer can enjoy it on two levels.

I think measuring the influence of stuff so recent is an extremely difficult task at best, impossible at the worst. Like personally I doubt that in the grand scheme of things either of those will have a lasting effect, while others might in its place.

I'd say the best criteria is: what anime do you think you will see people reminiscing over fondly 20 years from now? Yes, it might be stuff that is merely "popular", but if it solidified itself into the public consciousness to a degree that even decades from now people talk about it (like what happened with Eva, Lain, Bebop, etc), then its worthy of consideration. It's for this reason that I didn't include idol / isekai / "big 3"-type shonen shows in my list, because as popular as they are they will either leave a faint impression over time due to their target audience OR their audience will remember them but only in a "hey, that got me into anime, but I've since seen better" kind of way.

That doesn't help in the bias department though. People can have a skewed view due to personal attachment. We can get a solid list out of it but the top spot will cause problems. People can't pin point the best in this decade if they haven't seen every single show that came out during that time; not everyone here would have seen everything that came out so the best they have seen is their number 1.
A 'favorite anime' poll would make more sense in that case.

Not really. Awards = AOTD more so than popular opinion because fun fact: little 13-14 year old children will watch anything you put in front of their face and think it’s good. This is why awards determine AOTD because people who know the difference and work on anime are the ones giving the awards. This is why Madoka Magica is the AOTD because even though most of the underage anons here can’t understand the series or didn’t watch it because of how it looks it doesn’t take anything away from the anime.

What’s up with Yea Forums and not remembering shit they’ve seen in the past? I remember every inuyasha episode I’ve ever watched and that was my first anime. How the fuck do people here have so much brain damage? Is pretending to forget what happened in an anime supposed to be an insult? If it is its not very effective. Whatever makes you happy; I watched Inuyasha too and liked it a lot but I can't recall every single episode like does, so maybe my memory is weaker but I remember things like Samflam just fine.

I watched it in 2011 like most of you autists. It scores points for unique visuals, but it's not like I haven't been blown away by unique visuals before, let alone by SHAFT.
It gets points in story mainly for subverting mahou shoujo tropes, but again, this is nothing new. People who praise Madoka for genre subversion are newfags who need to watch more old anime.
Honestly, I enjoyed Madoka. I liked the visuals. I liked the Faustian theme. Character design was meh. Story didn't wow me but was still okay.
It's easily the most overrated anime I can think of.

I had Inuyasha on in the background while I went to bed and I still remember any episode you’ll show me. I was almost as uninvested as you can get. Just watch the anime guy. It’s literally 12 episodes.

Cross Ange was the one that I enjoyed watching with you the most Yea Forums so I'm going to go with that.

Watch Madoka and if you finish the show and you think the “story is okay” the most likely scenario here is you’re a dumbass and you didn’t understand the show. It’s as simple as that.
