The angels motives were described from Anno as such: they want to join with adam to destroy humanity, they want to join with lilith to become god and start the world over, and others just didnt have anything in mind.
When an angel touches lilith we get a scene similar to what happened in 3.0. The Angel starts to force humanity to become just like it self and merge them all into one.
Angel touches adam, adam is reborn and destroys man kind.

I don’t belive even Anno understands what SEELE intended for Kaworu. For them to initiate their instrumentality all angels had to be disposed of, but why does Kaworu even count when he’s just a second Adam, and Adam doesn’t count in his first incarnation as an angel? I've seen people get very philosphical with this series speaking of 'heavy christian tones' and what not. My interpretation after watching it is 'life is what you make it' a lesson that the movie Joe Dirt was able to get accross in far less air time.

Episode 14, Gendo and Fuyutsuki are in Gendo's office in the middle of the night discussing the progress of the Adam Project, its growth, the addition of the Lance of Longinus, and that Rei is handling it. Unit 00 is then shown carrying the lance and walking down the giant ominous corridor, and the end of 15 is the first time the crucified half of giant impaled on Longinus is shown.

This. At the time of the episode, it was Adam in the minds of everyone making the show, Sample A-01 had been carefully allowed to regenerate to that point and then arrested there with the spear. Lilith didn't exist at all until Anno changed his mind late in the series, possibly during editing of 23 which included one image implying the body had once been whole and was cut in half to produce Eva-01 more than a decade ago, before Lilith's name appears for the first time in 24. You can see it in the released production material, Lilith just isn't in there, even as late as draft scripts for 24 the hanging body is exclusively referred to as Adam. The Black and White Moons and the competing Seeds of Life plot was original to Death.

I watched this show for the first time this week. I was loving every second of it up until the end. The last 2 episodes and then the end of evangelion. I just cant fucking believe that after being coherent for 24 episodes leading to a very interesting climax, it ends with incoherent psychobabble inside shinjis fucking schizo brain.

Is there any sort of alternate ending out there that isnt endless hallucinations and philosophical inner conflict? Like maybe a physical ending? I was much more interested in the mysteries surrounding the various secretive organizations, the underground structures, the angels and where they came from etc. They spend like 23/24 episodes saying "This is what this show is about". I know theres more material out there and some alternate endings, buy I literally can not watch another minute of Shinji having a schizophrenic break and trying to decide if he hates himself or not. 3 hours of shinjis inner monologue about hating himself was 2 hours and 50 minutes too long.

Also did Netflix censor it? I seem to remember everyone talking about the brutality of Asukas death and how sad it was but honestly it wasnt clear to me or sad. Her eva got mangled and shredded sure but I never saw her get brutally torn to shreds so I'm not even sure if shes dead or if maybe everyone I grew up with is just a fucking pansy who considered that to be a really sad death.

I also learned to hate shinji and his useless retard self.

Who was inside Unit 00? I always assumed it was Naoko Akagi, since it was implied you needed a mother's soul inside of the Evangelion to make it work with a pilot, and it was suspicious that Unit 00 would finally work just after Naoko died. Another thing to back that up would be how Unit 00 tried to kill both Gendo and itself when it was tested for Rei II. The only question left would be why Rei could pilot it if Naoko wasn't her mother, but I suppose it wouldn't have to be her mother specifically, since we know the Evas will work if other pilots use them or other people are in the cockpit (Like with Asuka and Shinji against the 6th Angel, and when Shinji fought the 4th after taking in Touji and Ken).

It's always odd to me that they never really went deep into Rei's relationship with her Evangelion, when that went hard with Asuka and Shinji.

As for your thing about Rei being able to pilot a soulless Eva, that wouldn't work. The only Evangelion made of Lilith is Unit 01. Unit 00 and 02 were clones of Adam, and couldn't be controlled by Lilith in the same way Kaworu controls Unit 02. Kaworu could only do that due to it being Adam's body, basically.
And for Toji, the reason he could pilot was because every single person in Shinji's class was a potential Eva candidate. They brought that up around the same time. It's also a known thing that every one of those kids has a dead mother. I really don't believe that that's fan fiction. There are implications put into the show, especially from what Kaji tells Misato around the time of Toji being the Fourth. Kaji tells Misato that the Marduk foundation that finds Eva pilots doesn't exist, and tells her to look into the classification "A-2." Misato says that it's the name of Shinji's classroom. We know that the kids in class don't have mothers, or at the very least every kid that was a pilot. Ritsuko and Gendo also say, as Unit 03 is being delivered, that they have "a candidate for whom a core can be readied immediately." So that means, at least, that the core of an Eva has to be prepped for a specific Child to achieve the needed sync ratio. It all makes sense, at least.

Its how it worked with Shinji and Asuka AND Toji's mom is dead, as is Hikari's and Kensuke's and the rest of the class.

Part of Lilith's soul is in Eva00. After Naoko killed Rei 1 her soul split in two. Gendo then put part of her soul in Eva 00 abd the other part in Rei II. After Rei self destructs her Eva her soul is released from both her body and the Eva and becomes whole again, and is being put back into Rei III.

After that point, it's assumed that Adam is implanted in Gendo's hand, so the Angels could hypothetically be targetting either one so long as Gendo is in Tokyo-3.

I wasnt looking for manlier or cooler, I was looking for a redemption arc. We began to see one near the end, where shinji seems to have come to terms with his fate and accepted it. Going from being too afraid to pilot the Eva's, to realizing other people rely on him for their survival and how important his role is was a good story. It got the the point where when they told him to launch and attack the angel he just said "Yes mam!" And launched because he had discovered he held convictions worth fighting for.

Then suddenly he becomes a bitch again, and sits around watching others get pummeled because he cant get over the fact that he jerked off to his comatose friend.

They reversed all his gains for the ending. I get annoyed doesnt like happy endings but the repetition inside shinjis mind really got on my nerves. I kept saying to myself "We've been through this exact thought loop before". Maybe that was the point, idk. But it was not very good story telling to just real time play through shinjis endless anxiety thought loops. Agels are as old as he first impact. They went into hibernation after Adam was incapacitated with his Spear of Longinus after Lilith landed on Earth. This potentially could work although events in Eva are at large predetermined by the prophecies in the dead sea scrolls. Eva universe operates on unavoidable fate, and because Impact is written in the scrolls, something will always go wrong and the Impact will happen. I don't know if this still pertains the after EoE world where Adam and Lillith are already dead or if the prophecies continue beyond.

Toji was synching with it for a few seconds, then the angel took over. This angel is different than Adam, it made a nest within the entry plug and waited for the pilot to make contact which it then highjacked.
