Anno has fucking lost it, the sooner he's done with this and moves onto other things the better, sticking with Eva this long has obviously not done anything good for his skill. The random jargon has gotten horrible too, in the original it was mostly single terms or names that came up quite often so they didn't seem like random shit, now they are just spouting random numbers and terms out their ass.

They're in Paris to get new arms for the pink Eva and fix up Unit 02 after Asuka self-destructed it. There's a Paris Nerv because a lot about the setting is changed from the show and everything works differently, I think to give the top autists new lore to speculate about because that always drove a lot of the interest in Eva. The girl is Mari and she probably isn't.

What's not cool however, is that it's used in yet another pointless action scene with the most worthless character in the Rebuilds.
Last time I checked, this was supposed to be the final movie in this series. Wasting 10 minutes on such a pointless scene that doesn't advance the plot or character development is a pretty bad idea, unless you're making a movie where none of those things really matter.

I'm not a big fan of the new aerial fighting, it has no weight. You have all this spinning in the air with weak enemies being blasted away, like a generic mecha. The sword fight with Asuka and the MPEs is one of the best animated fight scenes ever because it conveys the sheer weight and scale of the Evas and the huge slabs of metal they're swinging around.

Going back to the plot for a second. I don't think the final is going to go back to the EoE because as far as we know events of that movie have pretty much already happened. This time around we can observe an after-Third Impact world and human conflict within it. There is one thing though, SEELE's myserious plans seems to continue as predicted by the dead sea scrolls apparently and Gendo has read it. That's why he's always "according to keikaku", he literally knows what's going to happen and allows Misato make her moves because he already knows the outcome. There is no "probability" of success, the DSS decide how the events will follow. This would suggest that everything that happens after the Impact is also part of the prophecy, that there is more to it than just the end of the world.

Well when you think about it Mari is basically a version of Kaji that Asuka can actually relate to and bond with on a real and genuine level.

There's a reason why they completely removed whatever history, relationship and romantic interest she had going on with Kaji in the original series. Because unlike Kaji - when it comes to Mari, there's no gender barrier preventing them from understanding one another, no real gender expectations that could prevent from trusting or doubting one another, and no real age barrier that would stop either of them from getting intimate with one another (at least not superficially.)

Plus Asuka wouldn't have to compete with another love interest to win her over if she wanted to (Mari had her crush on Yui but it's clear she's learned to move from it.)
On top of being a female Kaji in terms of her flirty attitude and her role as a double-agent, she has a positive and hopeful outlook on life just like Kaworu, which - like Shinji - is something that Asuka needs in her own life. So yeah there's a high chance she's going to end up being Asuka's true love interest once these movies are finally fucking over and done with. The director is just trying to push his favorite characters, not create characters with depth. It's a business and arguably otaku strategy so he gets his waifu up top.

Because IMO, Shinji does genuinely care for her in a very real and selfless way. Hell the entire Rebuild series revolves around the recurring meetings and separations that occur throughout their developing relationship in each and every Rebuild film, when you really think about it. Even in 3.0.

Askuka wasn't even in the first movie so she only has two movies while Rei has three. If you don't consider Rei Q to be Rei, then that still only makes them even. Rei is and always will be a key player in the grand scheme of things considering her origin.

2.22 spent most of it's time not just buffing up Asuka and moeing down Rei, but it also wrested from Rei the iconic and powerful features she had, like her blue EVA00, her mental scenes or basic things like the Lance.
Then 3.33 spends most of it's time destroying Rei's relationship with Rei, even naming it as a "sin" in the story and the cause of the world going under. I don't really think what you're talking about is going to pan out here.
Especially in the shipping game which seems to be what you're caring about rather than a character withmultiple facets, did you not catch how they unsubtly renamed Yui to Ayanami, and retconned Rei into a clone of Yui? The whole doll thing doesn't work out either.
If you actually understand the Rebuilds, you'll see that it's building a platform for fans to speculate positively about Asuka and Kaworu, but negatively about Rei. Even Rei's VA agrees here.

Asuka shouldn't be in the first movie as she was never in the first quarter of the original. That much just makes sense. It's not about having equal screentime or movies, you have to be a really greedy and fucked up Asukafag to even propose that.

In 2.0, Asuka is full tsun cooking for Shinji and realizing at the end she actually enjoys talking to and confiding in others. Rei becomes the waifu that most Reifags wanted her to be, falling for the MCs dick and cooking food for him, trying to get him back together with his dad, etc.

In 3.0 the two girls are complete caricatures again in the other direction. Asuka is now full bitch who seemingly hates Shinji and Rei is LITERALLY a blank slate of a character with no personality or motivation besides following orders. Both movies just show two of the extreme sides of the spectrum of the archetypes setup for them in NGE.

Starting a dinner party and trying to get Shinji and Gendo together is something I could see the original Rei doing IF she got some more time with Shinji and Gendo, and the motivation to do it - which 2.0 provides. It's a change and a weird one, but it's not that far off.
The bigger problem is Asuka who is even renamed, given solo angel kills right off the bat, has uncomfortable parts of her personality removed like how she wanted to fuck older men, and all that.

Well, that parallels Yui berseker ridden state to save Shinji from Zeruel in the series down to a T. To the point where Shinji and Yui fully absorb their child-figures' souls into their cores.
Gendo using a soulless Rei puppet to trick Shinji into joining Nerv in 3.0, only for Shinji to realize that Rei Q isn't his real Rei at all, so he soon outright rejects her? Well, that sounds awfully similar to Gendos attempt to trick Yui into entering the berserker state with the dummyplug system in both series and the Rebuilds.
Gendo subtly manipulating the parent-child bond between Yui and Shinji throughout the entire OG series in order to achieve his own selfish goals? Guess what, pay attention the the impact mumbo-jumbo discussions that occur between Gendo and Fuyutsuki in all 3 Rebuilds; the first 2 especially. He's doing the same here... except the connection that Shinji and Rei share existed LONG before the the third impact; WELL BEFORE they were even born. Which just adds more fuel to the fire about rebuild Shinji being something nonhuman.
And that's just the tip of the iceburg.

Surprisingly plausible and likely since Anno did have a say in Anima which is where where those Kaworu Shinji comparisons stemmed from. It also helps that the Rebuilds are laden with soulmate symbolism and imagery, especially through the designs of the mass-production artificial evas and angel units like the Mark 4's and the Wunder, and even through the looks of the impact events themselves - but who knows what'll happen really. I don't think Anno has it in him to spill all of the details if this really is the case. Maybe allude to it or imply it, but nothing more than that, if it ever ends up holding some truth to the movies.

I like how third impact are reverse in NGE and rebuild. In NGE, Rei become one with Lilith and decide to save shinji who was crawling. In rebuild, shinji somehow awaken Eva unit 01 (which I think is one of the evangelionize Adam) and saves rei who was also crawling. Also in NGE, rei absorbed a weaken Adam while in the rebuild, shinji/Eva 01 absorb rei who is part of Lilith. I guess EOE is Lilith version of impact while the rebuild is Adam version of Impact

Eva 06 was constructed from the remnants of "Lilith's" shriveled-up body that was excavated from the moon.

The "Lilith" that we see in Terminal Dogma isn't actually Lilith, but Adam, hence the angel mask. Because Gendo and Seele are once again lying under everyone's noses and are deliberately trying to fool people. It's also the reason why the angels were traveling to Nerv in the first place. They were truly trying to reunite with Adam, not "Lilith."
he 12th angel that was an artificial angel created by Seele that that was intended to trigger an impact once it simulataneously core-merged with Adam and Lilith respectively. And it turns out the 12th angel is also a sort of Rie dummyplug system as indicted in scenes like pic-related.

Basically it's a sort of pseudo-repeat of tthe impact events that happened at the end of 2.0, just swap
>"Lilith"/Mark 6's place with unit 01/Shinji at the end of 2.0
>the 12th angel's with Zeruel-absorbed Rei at the end of 2.0
>Rei-infused Adam's place with a Rei-infused Zeruel at the end of 2.0

When Shinji absorbed the angel-contaminated Rei into Unit 01's core, it resulted in the death of the Rei-infused Zeruel.
This is the reason why Kaworu was freaking out and in pain during the whole Terminal Dogma situation withe the spears. Because he realized that the 12th angel's complete absorption into Mark 6/"Lilith" and would result in the complete destruction of his original, now Rei-infused body, until the impact was halted at a standstill with the spears.
The Adam-corrupted 12th angel/Rei dummyplug was then automatically absorbed into Eva 13, which was solely being controlled by an impact-trigged Shinji at the time. This then lead to the initiation of 4th impact.

If Toji were there it would present a healthier perspective on piloting for the other Children and work as an emotional crutch for Shinji, though there would inevitably be drama between him and Asuka, whose mentality is completely the opposite and clashing to his. I can totally imagine Asuka flipping out if someone told her piloting isn't all there is to life.

But all the angels, including Kaworu (which could be considered the smartest one), assumed that was Adam's body impaled in terminal dogma, until he actually goes down there.
We could assume that Seele's 7 eyes mask is to identify an Adam, and that's what we all assumed in NGE until Kaworu realizes of that. On Rebuild, most know that it's Lilith's body, that's why she doesn't wear Seele's 7 eyes mask anymore.
IIRC Eva-06 is based on Adam, like the rest (except Eva-01), in this case the last scene of Rebuild 1.0 Seele's 7 eyes mask is correct, identifying an Adam.
