They adapted the 4koma format a bit too literally, so it came across as a disjointed collection of sketches rather than a coherent show. Plus the DVD prices didn't help.

IIRC it had around 300K viewers per episode back when it was streamed on Niconico and nowadays its MADs and clip collections of have millions of views. If Nichijou wasn't actually popular in Japan, TMA wouldn't have picked them as their target.
