Contract your muscles and hold that position for a solid second before slowly letting yourself down.
I guess by training your muscles until you can do a pull up? If you're fat you should give up on pull ups for now, if you're a skelly just train your upper body a bit until you can do it.

For someone that already has muscle mass, it prevents them from losing lean mass while cutting.
If you're new to fitness, you'll still build some strength, but at the very least, it'll give you more time and practice with the bar. Weight and bulking or cutting aside, you'll probably have balance and mobility issues starting out, so better to get some practice in sooner than putting off learning it later.
It isn't so much about building mass at that point, but there's certainly a lot of just general health / technique benefits to starting lifting during your initial cut.
Changing your weight will have more to do with your diet than exercise.
Lifting is just more efficient at building strength and lean mass than calisthenics, both for the variety of lifts available, and for the ability to progressively add resistance via weights as you get stronger.
It's okay as a real brief rundown on general concepts, but they just don't have enough time to go super in-depth on a lot of topics, variations on lifts, or in what situation A might be better than B or vice versa.
Has a couple questionable chapters like the one recommending BCAA's, but more the most part it's a'ight as a starting point for certain things.
Tl;dr, it puts the peak sheer force of each rep on your tendons instead of your muscles, if you squat above parallel.
Something like box squats has a time and place in certain programs, but because of the box, it lessens some of those forces on your tendons.
Pick up a basic routine like Starting Strength, Strong Lifts, 5x5, MadCow, etc. They're all fairly similar
Go to YouTube and start watching how-to videos on all the lifts in whichever routine you pick.

Depends what you're going for, and your goals.
I tend to do a lot of high bar Olympic squats, and Zercher deadlifts (in place of front squats due to medical reasons). Better for general athleticism and carryover to other sports.
Low bar power squats are better for just moving heavier amounts of weight, though, so they're super popular, and you'll see everyone powerlifting doing them.

If you want to workout without leaving the house, just do calisthenics. Find a real bodyweight routine, and it's as good as going to the gym if not even better.
Calisthenics is really underrated in general. You save so much time by not having to go to the gym, you can workout whenever and wherever you want while blasting anime OSTs, and you don't have to worry about sharing nasty gym equipment with others. Sure there are downsides too, but I think the pros easily outweigh the cons for most people.

For powerlifting I'd suggest 5/3/1 or something similar. Smolov Jr or Candito's program if you're up for a challenge. But those last two routines could carry someone to an advanced level, around 5-6 plate deadlifts, and 4-5 plate squats.
For more bodybuilding style, I'd just make the routine for my friends myself, since everyone has different proportions, I don't like to recommend a one-size-fits-all for bodybuilding splits.
For strongman or Olympic lifting, I'd have them DM one of my friends that competes in whatever they're interested in; I only know so much
Either way, following a novice or intermediate program, you'll likely transition to some kind of routine that uses percentile based training. But here's a pic of some novice / intermediate ones to check out, for now.

It's alright. /fit/ shits on most everything, but desu someone doing a shitty routine for a year is going to get better results than someone doing an amazing routine every now & then.
These are 4 routines I've made. Novice is what I'd likely start someone on in place of something like 5x5. 2-4 months later move them to intermediate, since it's the exact same style of routine, just adds more variety.
I feel kinda meh about the intermediate strength routine, esp for upper body work, but it'll certainly get your squat and deads up there, and still help you put on a lot of overall mass.
The routine to the right is actually what I'm following atm. It has a lot more little notes & nuances that would take me a while to explain. But it's more of a powerlifting style training for the lower body, & bodybuilder for upper body. I've got a tumor that prevents me from doing certain lifts, so I make due, but it's gotten me fantastic results, & follows a lot of the same basic principles of how I designed the other routines
Colors show you how many sets and reps to do for that lift, shown in the key to the right
The idea for red / yellow lifts is that the first 4 sets are warmups, so you start lighter, & gradually add weight each set, until your last 2
And your last two are as heavy as you can (safely) go for 5-ish reps
So say for DB shoulder press, it might look something like
1st set: 9 reps of 35 lbs
2nd set: 9 reps of 35 lbs
3rd set: 7 reps of 40 lbs
4th set: 7 reps of 45 lbs
5th set: 5 reps of 50 lbs
6th set: 5 reps of 50 lbs
Dotted border around them means that they have the use the same setup / equipment, so you can do them back to back to save time
If you want to add cardio, you can, but it isnāt necessarily required. If you do add it, Iād suggest doing it Tu/Th, or after lifting, not before

Can always just use them as templates and change them up for your equipment at home.
Replace DB bench with BB bench. Lat pulldowns with pull ups. DB shoulder press with overhead press. Cable pushdowns with skullcrushers, etc, etc
Bodybuilding routines tend to make use of more machines, equipment, and dumbbells than powerlifting routines. They like isolating muscles and having as much variety as possible, rather than just working on 3 main lifts, and accessories for said 3 main lifts.

For the most part, freeweights / compounds tend to be better, especially if you're just trying to get in and out of the gym as fast as possible.
But say you're recovering from an injury, or surgery. Like if your knees or shoulders aren't stable enough to support a free weight, they might still be able to use certain machines.
Or maybe your lock-out is weak on deads. You can isolate the glutes with barbell hip thrusts to help address it.
Or if bench press isn't quite hitting your inner pecs as hard as the rest of your chest, you can isolate that spot to help keep your physique proportional.
It's more about starting from the basics, and figuring out your strengths and weaknesses as you go, cause they'll start to pop up in everyone the more advanced you get. Start broad, end up with something more specific and tailored later

No. Increase the weight until you can barely do 10. If you can't do 9 on any of the sets lower the weight. If you can do 15, increase the weight.

Could be a number of things, from your routine, to form, to diet, to lack of sleep, to just what lift you're trying to progress in.
Would try to figure it out in either the powerlifting general (plg) thread, or Question that don't deserve their own thread (QTDDTOT) thread over on /fit/. Would take too long to delve into here.
Higher rep sets like 10-15 is better for smaller accessory lifts like curls, but it's better to do something more like 5-10 reps/set for larger lifts like squats or deads.
Man I actually tried the squats and I can now empathize with Hibiki, my legs were killing me the next day.

Just whatever it takes to make a habit out of it. Everyone runs out of motivation sooner than later.
You have to find something else to keep you going, even when you really don't want to.
Start a regular program you can commit to ā the structure helps a lot more than some formless concept of āIām going to work outā. Find one with an app or website to hold you accountable. Stronglifts 5x5 is great starter material even if youāre the king of DYEL.

A friendly tip, you don't count the bar's weight in your numbers. It seems like it makes complete sense to do so, but you just simply don't. It isn't how it's done.
Feel free to say "well, INCLUDING THE BAR, what I'm actually lifting is THIS!" in your head to make hype yourself up if you want, but for your records and if anybody asks, your numbers are just what you have in the plates on the bar.

Everyone's gotta start somewhere! I know it helps you feel good about your progress by adding that number to your totals, and I don't want to discourage you or anything, but that's just how it's done.
Don't worry, user, consistency and incremental weight increases will have your real numbers looking better before you know it. Remember, ideally, you want to be lifting for a very long time-- for years, or maybe even forever! Just don't measure your progress in time and you'll get there!
Try adding half a pound or even one pound to your isolation lifts (like curls) per week, and 3-5 pounds to your compound lifts (bench, squats, deads) per week. If the number you added is too hard for you to complete your reps, dial it back for another week and try again next time!

Including the weight of the equipment you use is an exercise in insanity, as it can vary from place to place, from person to person. Unless you're in some sort of official competition with a group of people using the exact same bar, including it in your totals is senseless. What's relevant, and universally understood from person to person and place to place, are the numbers on the plates you put on the bar.
If you practice bicep curls with an unloaded dumbbell handle, which weighs, say, five pounds, you don't say you're curling five pounds. When you do a pushup, you're pushing your bodyweight. Your body is the tool you're using. If you weigh 170 pounds, you don't say you're doing pushups with 170 pounds, you just say you're doing a pushup. But suddenly, just because the bigger bar has a bigger number, it gets included? For what purpose; inflating your numbers?
The bar is the baseline and shouldn't be included. If you told somebody you bench 200, and then they watched you load up 180 on the bar, you're going to look real sad when you have to explain to them that you include it in your total for your ego.

Everyone who's gone to the gym and actually LIFTED, you mean. There are plenty of people who go to the gym and do only cardio, or weight machines, or take some kind of class. Not everyone automatically goes to the free weights.
