Much better than I expected especially after the PVs and of course WIT being behind it. The only negative is that the music is really weak from the shitty OP/ED to the disappointing OST in general, you would think they would have point as much effort into the sound like they did with the art. I don't really have much to save especially since this portion of the story isn't all that interesting probably because this was back when it was a shounen manga before the transfer but I was pleasantly surprised with these episodes.

Vinland Saga is a bit of a weird beast. It started out somewhat shounenshitty, I won't deny it, but then gradually ditched a lot of the shounen elements for a more grounded approach, becoming almost a slow burn at times. Farmland Saga is absolute kino and fighting takes a backseat there, ultimately doesn't even resolve the conflict. You sometimes get the feeling that the mangaka might have liked to tell more of a historically accurate tale, more of a Viking slice of life, but couldn't possibly sell it to his editor, so he takes the tried and tested shounen approach so he can get his vision published at all, especially in the beginning.

I get that feeling too. You get the sense he's totally in his element in Farmland. The way he expresses the emotional peaks of things like clearing land and managing to rip stumps out of the ground is pretty incredible. It made me appreciate just how fucking great humanity is that most of our species time on earth has been spent farming. Because that shit is hard.

That's just your confirmation bias for your headcanon. The relationship in Thorfinn's fictional background completely ties into the various arcs, including your beloved Farmland Saga. The entire point is to show how Thorfinn deals with problems differently as he grows up but ultimately in the grand scheme of things never ever succeeds and always takes the wrong choice for the big picture. All he does is favor the little people and short sighted idealized goals, and he slowly learns step by step that even his trivial desire is in fact, impossibly difficult to obtain with whatever method he decides to use, whether it's trying to kill Askeladd as a boy, trying to solve problems without violence, or trying to create a utopia at Vinland. It's all escapism for Thorfinn because the moment Thors died Thorfinn was never whole again. All his actions are a form of escapism which is why every time he grows he confronts his issues, just that he ends up deciding upon a totally impractical resolution which leads him and those around him to more misery. But on the other hand, because he's not calculative, because he's wholehearted, because he's sincere and wants to do things right every step of the way he ends up jumping through hoops to the reader's entertainment while never actually getting the best results he was aiming for.

Thorfinn is very much the son of Thors, both are escapists who tried/tries to run away from reality whenever possible despite being the greatest warriors of their era and having the minds capable of changing the entire game board of Europe, because for all that they are capable, they are simply too pure and seek to escape the burden that Canute shoulders, the burden that distorted Sven into the monster that he is, the burden that turned Askeladd into the drifting viking that he himself loathes. And so Thorfinn will take a life time to learn what Canute did in one arc and see how he missed the train on his death bed.

If he had the balls to take Canute's hand the North Sea Empire would have flourished well beyond Canute's generation because the most important aspect of a monarchy is maintaining a steady successor line and that requires the ruler to have the leeway to raise their heir properly instead of simply letting his vassals and subjects and wives do it for him. Thanks, I just really enjoy Yukimura's bittersweet teasing. It's something I rarely see in historical series. Usually a historical character would have more justification for why they didn't take the 'better' path, but with Thorfinn Yukimura was just damn brutal and basically slaps the reader with 'because this boy still hasn't grown up enough yet now enjoy the ride on the pain train after this SoL intermission'.

Sounds fair enough, but the point stands that Vinland Saga isn't just "shounenshit in denial" and we can assume that the shounen elements are mostly present to sell the series to his editor, as evidenced by the fact that they are strongest in the very beginning. Because what you outline in your posts is not the typical moral nor formula of your generic shounenshit fare. If it was, Thorfinn would use his awesome fighting prowess and the power of friendship to not only reach Vinland but actually turn it into his personal utopia, with many a boss fight against superhuman evildoers on the way towards it.

Oh, I never argued against that. I was just saying the first arc is indeed very relevant, shonen elements and all. There is little to no waste in Yukimura's story telling as far as I can tell, they all serve a purpose even if trivial, so I just can't say it's forced.

Personally I've always seen it as seinen. Just because it has murderhobo action scenes shouldn't categorize it as shonenshit, otherwise Berserk would never be hailed as greatly as it did considering it makes Vinland Saga look tame.

As for whether they used action to hook readers in, that's naturally a yes even though I absolutely think it's not the main reason but obviously no good writer would only plan around one reason for each of their moves. It is however, simply necessary because the violence and trauma is what sets off Thorfinn's development, and how he becomes obsessed with Thors always trying to surpass this idolized version of his father in his heart when he honestly never really understood his father. Without that first arc the impact of Farmland Saga and subsequent arcs would pale in comparison because we wouldn't have that gruesome foundation to establish upon itself.

Even if we take say, Historie which is relatively tame in action, it all starts with bloodshed when shit hits the fan, and it is that start with Thrax, the revelation of Eumenes' real mother, etc etc, that creates the Eumenes we see currently that's cold, calculative, but still has a bit of heart unwilling to cut all ties even when he's being pulled into dangerous shit, which I suspect will eventually be the reason why he ends up historically dead if Iwaaki is still alive by then.

Things get probably a lot more flexible with when you introduce the violence and bloodshed in a story if you don't go the tragic hero route.
