That "preview" only proves once and for all that Anno does not have even the slightest clue of what he is doing with this franchise and is basically taking the piss. Its the exact movie I figured we'd get based on the preview at the end of 3.0: everything now is just weightless cgi graphics that reduces everything to a bunch of slapstick cartoon bullshit with no sense of gravity or physics. If you couldn't see the writing on the wall in 2013 you deserve absolutely no sympathy for being disappointed by this trash.

Make her role more defined and Mari herself more self aware of what her role is. Have it be made explicit that she's from a group that isn't NERV or SELEE (The Jet Alone group would've been perfect for her, but since that's going too far from the Mari we have, make it an oversight committee of the UN). She's there to provide backup to NERV, but also to report what is happening to her higher ups. Have her do that clearly once or twice a film, maybe even link up with Kaji in 2.0 as a source of intel. Maybe have it so that she's also explicitly kept in the dark about what exactly an Evangelion is, so the audience can understand why she doesn't treat them like anything but machines to pilot. And have someone say that she was raised in a military environment that would lead to her being accustomed to combat, and her talent in that lifestyle is why she enjoys battle so much.
Now with just very small tweaks to her character, she became a character that at the very least is understandable, in the plot for a reason, and has motive to act the way that she does. And the funniest thing is that most of that character is basically just slapping the first, better official Eva OC girl, Mana Kirishima, on top of Mari. That's all it takes.

They're related to Eva-04, the experimental unit that turned inside-out, disappeared, and took like a third of Nevada with it. Obviously, that all went to a pocket dimension where time was screwy, Eva development continued inside that vacuum for a hundred years, until 3rd Impact ripped the universe open again and it all came pouring out.

Knowing Anno's mental history, his decision to reboot NGE was probably an impulse. I can imagine that he was mentally at an extremely happy place in 2006, which led to an impulse to reboot NGE. But impulses are only momentary, so not long after production of the first movie began, he crashed back down to reality.
Even the first Rebuild movie had a fucking delay for its release even though it just recycles 90 percent of the first six episodes of NGE.

To explain succinctly, they offer very little compared to just watching NGE itself, and for newcomers, they offer a narrative that is shallow in it's characters and world, they expect you to already know everything about Evangelion, and so don't bother showing us the level of characterization from NGE. The only way to excuse that is time loop theory, which recontexualizes these into sequel movies, allowing us to see these as the same characters. But until then, they exist as action movies with puddles that stand in for Eva characters.
For 3.0, I think it valued feeling over narrative or character. The movie put us in Shinji's mind and has us feel that sense of confusion, guilt, desperation and doubt, but in doing so it burns the established narrative to the ground. 2.0 does not follow into 3.0 well at all, and it intentionally makes the characters not matter to the plot. For all of 3.0, there is almost no event in the story that is character driven, with the exception of Kaworu and Shinji hanging out. Otherwise, we are shuttled from point A to point B by the plot, expected to feel the emotions I described, and it's over. The characters are still suffering from the issue that hurt 1 and 2, they dont bother establishing motivation or personality on the assumption that you know them from NGE, when NGE may not be canon at all to these.
And I do not think a meta narrative angle excuses this. First off, I doubt the intent of 2.0 was to set people up for the rug being pulled out from them in 3.0, because we know that the film was heavily rewritten from the original script. Second, if we assume the theory that 2.0 and 3.0 were designed to be Anno attacking NEET otaku who wanted different things, having a message does not mean that the movie is good. A movie still needs to have a good narrative, and they do not.

Plot-wise, he knows exactly what he's doing with the plot.
The sci-fi jargon actually has meaning to it now, and once you really look into the details, you start to notice how well-planned everything was; from the very first 20 minutes of 1.0 to the new 10-minute preview of 4.0. It's all extremely well thought-out and makes a ton of sense once you put it all together; it's just presented in a very convoluted, subtle way. Pic related is just one example of this.
The real problem with the Rebuilds though, was that he sacrificed genuine character development and character focus for a far more in-depth and interesting take on backstory. And at the end of the day, people were more interested in whatever trauma the characters were going through then than whatever symbolic, narrative meanings were tied in with its sci-fi elements.
But then again, you can only put so much character focus on multiple characters throughout a movie series, where each sequel is about 2 hours, maybe 2 hours and 30 minutes tops. And Anno couldn't afford to do that with Rebuild. Hence Shinji really being the only "major" character throughout the new flicks, while the other iconic characters get shafted as a result.
The real fault in all of this is that Rebuild should've been a TV series, not a movie series.

Would you want your fans figuring out all of the mysteries well before the they even get to the final movie, for example? No, that would completely kill off the WTF factor and fucking babyrage rants from waifufags.
But despite these rewrites, everything still manages to display some level of importance to the plot. Even seemingly pointless shit like the Vatican Treaty that was briefly mentioned in 2.0 made a comeback in the 4.0 preview, with all of it playing an important part in the ongoing plot.
The Key of Nebuchadnezzar is the new Adam Embryo. SEELE utilized the brain portion of the nervous system in order to overtake 4th impact during the events of 3.0's climax, hence why the key's missing its brain. However they were twarted by Gendo when he killed Kaworu with the chocker and ejected Shinji out of Eva 13 via Mari's help. Gendo plans to use the remaining Key to trigger instrumentality through his own means.
It's it emotionally fulfilling for the waifufags or for people who enjoyed Eva for its deep, tragic, psychological character development? No. And this is where the Rebuilds fail.
But is it interesting from a plot/piece-it-together yourself scifi jargon perspective? Yes. And unfortunately, these aspects of the movies get frequently ignored or shit on due to lack of fulfilling character development and character focus.
Most of these questions can be answered if you have the patience, the IQ or the autism to piece the movies' narrative clues together, but answering all of these in a single post would be too much work.

My take is that the rebuild series isn't made for newcomers and should be watched with the original series fresh in your mind. My interpretation is not so much time loop as the world has been reconstructed post eoe (hence the rebuild title.) The main difference is that Asuka and Rei have been updated to match the modern versions of the character tropes they represented when nge was produced. The narrative elements that you would prefer to be repeated are deliberately left behind to focus on what would be done different if nge was made today. After all you can't fully remake the majority of the original series in one and a half movies.
I understand where you are coming from regarding 3.0. Like how 1 and 2 rely on the original plot for context, 3 relies on the original series to show how the characters differ. Asuka goes from tsun to psycho and Rei fully becomes the doll some fans imagine her to be. While the original series highlighted the trauma that lay behind the personalities of the two main girls, 3 showed the inverse by taking their personalities to the extreme. For me this is enough and I enjoy the action as windowdressing but I can see how others might feel that you need a kind of main narrative as well. Hopefully 3.0+1.0 will address this for the subset of people that want the "main" plot explained. I prefer the original ending to eoe and I imagine we might differ on opinion here as well.
As an aside I feel Anno is attacking the industry as much as the fans for churning out characters defined by the same tropes season after season. 3 for me feels like "what if these characters are pushed to the extreme" in comparison to "what are these characters coping with by acting out these tropes" in the original series.
Bear in mind this is purely my speculation and I wouldn't be surprised if some interview with Anno completely blew my interpretation apart

Well, that further depends on what you mean by initiating it doesn't it? Shinji doesn't initiate anything, there's no button or knowledge he has about initiating it.
Starting an impact is a hidden feature in the EVA he's using that can be activated by simply using it. Did the elevator guy who sent Shinji to the surface start third impact, did the guy who installed and set up EVA01 to make impacts start it?
We're dealing with a set-up here so the point of initiating something becomes instantly moot.
It's like Shinji stepped on a land-mine, where no one would expect one like in his home or at his workplace, and in that sense, sure. Shinji "initiated it", but it's a really dishonest way of putting it.

probably not, the only thing that makes the rebuilds cohesive at all is you're able to fill in all the gaps with stuff from the OG series. If the first 3 rebuilds were released as stand alone projects and 90s eva didn't exist, people wouldn't have a fucking clue what was happening in the rebuilds because so much content is skipped. Seriously, these Rebuild movies are a complete fucking mess and the only way you can make sense of it or enjoy them at all is with full knowledge of the original series

Going back to the plot for a second. I don't think the final is going to go back to the EoE because as far as we know events of that movie have pretty much already happened. This time around we can observe an after-Third Impact world and human conflict within it. There is one thing though, SEELE's myserious plans seems to continue as predicted by the dead sea scrolls apparently and Gendo has read it. That's why he's always "according to keikaku", he literally nkows what's going to happen and allows Misato make her moves because he's read about it in the DSS. This would suggest that everything that happens after the Impact is also part of the prophecy, that there is more to it.
