People are scared of different things. Some people even laught at horror because it look stupid. So yes, diving into the atmosphere is the point, because it's horrific for the characters not for the viewers.

It's like you know it's meant to be blood, but your brain is wired to associate the striking red color with it and be affected by w/e happens on screen, so that part is lost when the color's gone.
