People didn't realize the sequels were good until years after the fact. I know you won't admit it, but chances are you were one of the many people who hated them at the time, and changed your mind latter.

In a few years, Rebuild will be the same. People will have gotten over their disappointment and consider them on their own merits.

She's a vacuum sucking all life and soul out of Evangelion as an obvious marketing ploy. They're trying so hard to make her "unique" and otherworldly to the eva universum, but it comes off forced and awkward, full of lowest common denominator pandering. Her design is bland, her quirks are cringy and her writing is cursory with surface level relationships to other characters.
In short, pretty JARring.

She works for me as long as Asuka is involved.

Her character design does not fit into nge, she has a know it all condescending personality but at the same time no impact on the plot, every scene she's in is ruined. So many potentially good doujins were lost because the retarded artists felt the need to include her or use anything from rebuild at all.

Rebuilds are exactly like the prequels in that in both cases the creators have begun to second-guess themselves and feel it is their duty to give the fans what they think they want; i.e. lightsaber duels, robot battles and Boba Fett.

I liked her more when I realized she was probably named after Marie from Nadia.

She would have made more sense in a show that have backup B team pilots if you know what I mean.

She might have been more tolerable without the association to pink, it's just not a color that works well alongside Eva designs.

The movies didn't lay any groundwork to make people care about Mari on any significant level, forcing it into the last movie is too little too late. NGE made sure you cared about each and every character before it did something to them by carefully developing the characters and their relationships throughout the series, but Mari? Who even cares about her? Asuka? Maybe a little. Any other friendships or important relationships? Nope, none. Thus nobody is going to get hurt if she dies or whatever, no reason to worry about her. There's zero stakes.

They've already hinted that she knows the original Gehirn crew. Besides, I think you can only judge the Rebuilds and the characters in relation to the other iterations.

The prequels are terrible, they're just coherent with Lucas' style and vision. The Disney films lack that for a variety of reasons, not the least of which are arrogance and the lack of talent. That doesn't retroactively fix or excuse the myriad of problems with Episodes I, II, & III.

In a less cynical sense, she's supposed to be Mana Kirishima but an Eva pilot: someone who knows what's going on, is more adult than the other Eva kids, and wholeheartedly enjoys what she does. She's trying to do Things behind the back of SEELE, NERV and Kaji.

She fills in emotionally for Kaji and Misato to Shinji, while taking Hikari's spot as Asuka's girl bestie. She also provides the fanservice/stranger in a strange show feeling Asuka did when she was first introduced. She's fun Asuka to Shikinami's bitchy Asuka.

Neither was Kaji until Misato stopped being tsundere and shacked up with him again.

Her establishing scene has her doing the Kaji thing to Kaji; seeming like a bystander is kind of the point. She also consistently takes an interest in making Shinji more of a man, also like Kaji. Mari is fuckable Kaji. When you see her as fuckable Kaji, everything she does makes sense. It's voodoo spy shit, like Kaji's voodoo spy shit.

The problem with Mari is that she is not one of the OGs. She's completely outside the original Eva canon, even if you could joke that she's the VN bitches (Mana Kirishima and Mayumi Yamagishi) combined. Given what Maya Sakamoto said about her "destroying old Eva", the alienation is intentional. With something that has so much fandom autism as Eva, intentionally alienating the fans gets you, well, this thread.

No, we can say that after 3/4 of the story. A character who's shit 3/4 of the runtime is not going to miraculously become good, not with everything else going on.

Making these movies was a mistake. Without the original series you would have little to no connection with the characters because they are given a fraction of the amount of time that they need for the audience to get attached to them. Take Misato for instance, in the series her attachment and relationship with Shinji is given much more weight because it has more time on the screen. Same with Asuka whose entire arc can't be done in Rebuild because she is introduced in the second movie along with Mari and a bunch of other bullshit. But all of this can mostly be filled in with what the audience already knows, but without that you'd feel nothing for these characters. And it gets worse with the third movie where the cast gets wiped out and is basically revamped entirely along with everything else. So it is basically like the last two movies didn't even fucking matter. It really isn't surprising why it has taken so long to wrap this shit up, they went in such a radically new direction half way through thinking it might open up new avenues for the story to go but in the end they just wrote themselves into a corner and now they are trying to work their way out.
And I'm still not convinced this isn't some LCL world recreation by Shinji trying to fix everything after EoE which would be such a fucking terrible twist that it almost feels inevitable. Anno should have just made his Godzilla movie and then gone into retirement.

She's a poor man's Kaji. With Kaji you could actually see him work the network and contribute to the events not just as a passive observer. Kaji didn't seem above everything else or a special untouchable snowflake. He had history with Misato and therefore some emotional hook, he had good connetion with the pilots. Mari is literally a dry husk of each and every character she tries to replace.

Then there was no point in introducing her. Her role could have been split between already existing ones, but since they did decide to go with her, then they should have put some actual work into this character. Nothing she ever says or does from this point on is ever going to feel genuine no matter shat she reveals. She is only ever going to be a plot device and that is unavoidable.

There is no artistic reason to include Mari in Rebuild it's a purely commercial decision
