I think just the medium of it being a movie as opposed to a 26 episode anime with a movie ending limits the exploration of the themes and motifs that the OG series was able to explore.

It's why I honestly enjoy the Rebuilds. I view it through a different lens than the original series since they'll never really be the same. Once I saw the end of 1.11 with the multiple Kaworu coffin's I realized something was up and fitted my expectations accordingly.

At least 2.0 was entertaining schlock. For as bad as it was with portraying the characters as fleshed out as they were before, it was better than 3.0, which was just as bad in that regard as 2.0, but instead of flashy fights and an emotive (if absolutely dumbed down) cast, we got nothing of substance or messaging, veiled in outlandish scenery and fight scenes that felt like they were a Super Robot show compared to NGE or even the other Rebuilds. If Kaworu wasn't there to give a single actual emotional connection, it would have nothing, whereas 2.0 can at least fall back on it's action and giving Shinji a new character arc (which is only really new in the idea that he actually finished what he started with his fight against Zeurel in NGE, whereas NGE had the Eva go Berserker to finish it, in 2.0 Shinji himself kept pushing, like Asuka in EoE but without the evisceration).

And I'm still pissed off that the actual narrative and the visuals tell a completely different story from each other, because there is no way in hell Shinji's Near Third Impact is the reason shit is all fucked up in 3.0, yet everyone blames him for it.

Shinji is basically a vessel for Anno to deal with his at the time of NGE, degrading mental health due to depression and suicidal thoughts. So he worked it out through NGE, and Shinji is one of the core parts of himself at the time, a person who would hate the world for it's cruelty and suffering, but at the same time, reject any situation where someone reaches out to him, for fear of being hurt. So Shinji runs away, he doesn't want to pilot, he hates things, but he still does have the guilt deeply ingrained into him that brings him back to fufill his duty. He's a character that is better understood if you have experience with existential depression, but I wouldn't recommend trying to have that experience.

Asuka is the best girl in the series, no matter the iteration, so I would sure hope so

As far as I know, the most we had established for him backstory wise was that he was imbued with Adam's soul directly after Second Impact, his body was human with the Progenitor's soul like with Rei III, and he had full control over the power that implied (again, same as Rei III). Otherwise, I don't remember a timeloop in that run.

3.33 was unironically fantastic.
It had by far the most impactful opening of any of the rebuilds and each scene just keeps drawing you in. The only weak part of the movie is shinji loafing around doing basically fucking nothing in transition sequences between his interactions with Kaworu.
And it was pretty great that the "get in the fucking robot shinji" shit was turned on its head with Shinji wanting to get into the robot but it being the blatantly obvious incorrect thing for him to do.
Also Touji's imouto a fukkin' cute.

3.33 made it canon that pilots are basically eternally youthful. And Mari is basically all but directly stated to have been friends with/was physically around Ayanami Yui, and she has some crazy knowledge/awareness that places her into an observer role.
So basically her purpose, so far, has been purely to fill in some backstory/weird logistic shit that couldn't be conveniently told to the audience through other means.

I went to the 3.0+1 screening today, kaworu was easily the most popular to be cheered for. Reifags beat the asukafags when it came to first appearance cheers, but the asuka fags cheered for asuka more often. It seemed like the crowd didn't want to cheer for Rei Q because they knew it wasn't the real rei, you would hear hesitant and sad sounds from people, as if they really sympathised with shinji's feeling of confusion for this Rei that wasn't truly Rei, pretty neat. Also the ten minutes of 3+1 was Mari spotlight fighting little shit fleet angels, and then a fuckin NERV angel powered cannon. It was pretty fucking dumb but hey, pretty cool to see it there.

Shinji's characterization was literally the same as it's always been. He's a brat that operates purely on emotion and doesn't do shit of what he's told to do unless said emotion is appealed to.
In the mainline series and up to that point he was told to get into the fucking robot and he'd fight it tooth and nail even though if he did get into the fucking robot it'd solve most of his problems. In 3.33 he's being blatantly told that, thank god, not only does he no longer need to get into the robot, his synch rate is 0% so as far as they're aware he actually can't. Except Shinji doesn't fucking like that so he runs off and gets into the fucking robot of his own volition.

Very fucking unlikely, considering what we see in the movies. Shinji's about to fuck things up really bad and start Third Impact, but then Kaworu stabs him from space and stops that shit cold.
Something happened in the intervening 14 years that led to Shinji being shot into space, at least two more Angel attacks since they fought the 12th angel and thought it was dead by 3.0, Lilith woke up and got Rei/Yui's face, then got decapitated by Unit 06, fused with Lilith and the Twelth Angel, stabbed itself with both the Lances of Longinus and Cassius, the moon was brought low to the Earth and bled out onto the world, and the world itself got hit with some kind of mass terraforming that turned the planet red and made humanity become headless Unit 01 clones that all fucking died.
Literally none of that happened while Unit 01 was active. They explicitly state he was in a coma for 14 years, fused with Unit 01. It is 100% impossible for Shinji to have caused the world to be in this state. But everyone fucking hates him anyways.

Eva 2.0 ending was great and then we got it followed up by literally nothing.

All of the Rebuild films are trash but 3.0 is the best example of why they shouldn't exist. The first two are a compressed retelling of the series that loses most of the character building because of their compression, making them inferior to the original series and worthless on their own. 3.0 however may as well not even be in the same goddamn series of films or attached to Eva at all, the setting is so radically different it is practically indistinguishable, the characters may as well be completely new, aside from Shinji and Mari the whole cast are basically new people. 3.0 could almost stand on it's own as something else entirely because it is so detached from everything else. The only reason I can think of for these existing is to make more money, they are a cashgrab, nothing more nothing less. I personally can't wait for Gendo's plan to be revealed at getting his wife back, just like last time, because it sure is exciting when there is nothing new to discover.

The time loop theory is damn near accepted fact at this point in the community, and the movies themselves have done exactly one scene that could be confirmation, that being the flashes of Asuka from EoE in Until You Come To Me.
Almost all of it's assumed depth is fans doing their absolute best to help Anno make something redeemable out of the ashes of these movies that isn't just merchandise.

Misato is just kind of a weird case. She basically took on a soft mother role and wanted Shinji to do what the fuck he wanted to do for once.
But then she heads up Wille and has to deal with the hellscape that came as a direct result of Shinji's actions. And since not everyone has the same inclinations as Misato, they only look upon Shinji and despair because it's his fault they're in the position they're in, so she has to hold the same condemnations. This is probably tied to why she's so "harsh" on him in holding but hesitates and doesn't pull the trigger on the choker.

The hacker team segments feel very detached from fight. Aside from Mantsuko staring down flying debris, there is no feeling they are taking huge risk by carrying this operation out. Banter between teammates feels both forced and weak. Yeah the thing I dislike about Rebuild is how graceful the Evas are. In the original, everything just barely worked and ran on pathetic time limits. It was much more exciting.

The Rebuilds are also missing that crushing, small moments emotional depth. Like when Misato is lonely and even PenPen ignores her. Or when Auska released that Gendo took Unit 01 off ice to save Rei from the 16th angel when just a day earlier, he let Auska suffer against the 15th.

Rebuild is; “cool unit 02 is a dog now.” It’s still pretty okay, but it lacks the impact of the original stuff.
