Harmony Gold Tatsunoko Macross/Robotech License

Even Japan is shocked that Harmony Gold somehow got to extend its license on Macross/Robotech, especially Hidetaka Tenjin.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidetaka_Tenjin

Hidetaka Tenjin (天神 英貴 Tenjin Hidetaka, born 1973) is a Japanese mecha anime artist and science fiction illustrator.

he established the Tenjin Studio Ltd. where he began working on plastic model box art, video game software and DVD cover art, illustrations, etc., the best known being in the Hasegawa Macross series, the Bandai MG Gundam series, Konami's Gradius V videogame, Space Battleship Yamato Fact File illustrations, etc.

Tenjin Hidetaka has also worked as an animation artist in several sci-fi anime productions like Macross Zero, Sousei no Aquarion, Gundam Evolve, Macross Frontier and Macross Delta

Japs are speculating that this was done between Tatsunoko and Harmony Gold without any input from Big West so Big West might decide to sue Tatsunoko again. Big West won their last lawsuit against Tatsunoko by the way.

Nobody knows if anybody is lying or not but Harmony Gold's license on Robotech/Macross was suppose to expire on March 14, 2021 so I guess time will tell if Harmony Gold wasn't just bullshitting.

But the fact some Big West hotshot like Hidetaka Tenjin was genuinely shocked and surprised Harmony Gold managed to extend their Robotech/Macross license spells future trouble.

This could possibly be the result of a grudge between Big West and Tatsunoko and Tatsunoko decided to do a one last fuck you to Big West by extending Harmony Gold's license. Again, it is all speculation but one fact remains: Japan is shocked this happened especially a major Macross figure like Hidetaka Tenjin who tweeted on his twitter account:

twitter.com/TENJIN_hidetaka/status/1147418895562625025

So what does this mean for Yea Forums. It means no official subbed Macross Blu-rays, no Macross in Super Robot Wars, etc, etc for the foreseeable future.

One person isn't 'Japan'.

>no Macross in Super Robot Wars
SRW has been shit lately anyways so no real loss on that front

Also, the Japanese High Court determined that Tatsunoko never owned things like the designs of all the characters and robots either so yes Tatsunoko was kind of in the clear to license the original series, but not any of the characters/robots in it.

The characters and robots belong to Studio Nue.

Look up 4-1 here (the Macross incident)
system.jpaa.or.jp/patents_files_old/200406/jpaapatent200406_037-046.pdf

(図柄 refers to designs)

>TVアニメ製作に利用する許諾をしたとみることはできるが、譲渡する意思表示をしていない

tl;dr

Tatsunoko argued that when Kawamori and Studio Nue did the designs for Macross they transferred ownership of the designs to Tatsunoko. The Tokyo district court declared that Tatsunoko was full of shit.

This went to the Japanese High Court and:

>H14.10. 2 東京高裁 平成14(ネ)1911 著作権 民事訴訟事件
>控訴は上記のように棄却されました。したがってこの図柄(メカデザイン、キャラデザイン)を用いたアニメをタツノコプロが作ることも、第三者に許諾することもできません。

The high court upheld the district court's decision saying that Tatsunoko DOES NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO MAKE NEW SHOWS USING THESE DESIGNS, OR TO PERMIT THIRD PARTIES TO MAKE USE OF THESE DESIGNS.

But of course the US Courts gave zero shits about the Japanese court system.

Hidetaka Tenjin is a bigshot and his creations are involved in merchandising and also affects his ability to sell merc of his designs outside Japan.

>But of course the US Courts gave zero shits about the Japanese court system
The US has a different legal system from Japan. Is it so hard to understand?

This may extend to international court though.

I know it comes down to corporate pride, but for what purpose would you do this knowing full well anyone that actually consumes the product in question hates it and will continue to hate you for 35 more years?

>This may extend to international court though.

How does one get them involved?

People have been waiting 30 years for subbed Macross Blu-rays in America. Now they have to wait 35 more years.

That is 65 years in total. Everyone might be dead from old age at that point unless transhumanism becomes a thing and we become part robot in the future.

amerifats will never get macross unless they pirate it, deal with it

UK got Macross.

Honestly how the hell Is harmony gold still in bushiness in the first place since the haven produced anything in the last 5 years.
I think they have something to do with real estate based on there website but said website hasn't been updated since 2015
harmonygold.com/

have they done anything in the past couple of decades besides hold Macross hostage?

Repeatedly fucked with Battletech/Mechwarrior.

Some Robotech comics with horrible art

No FUCKING WAY HAHAHA

What bothers me isn't Macross not getting official releases outside Japan, because fansubs and piracy have you covered.
What gets me is the western bastardization they're going to inflict on it, like Sony's plans to turn it into a movie universe.

Tatsunoko's hatred of Big West dwarfs any issue they may ever have had with HG. This was absolutely a 'fuck you' move and them passing Sony the ball basically means Big West is fucked from the directions of all the winds. It's honestly such a delicious move on Tatsunoko's part that if it were a Go game it would have been a Divine Move, because Big West just lost a ton of face and they won't make any response that threatens what Sony plans because they'd just get crushed outright.

Licensed out RPG materials to Palladium that actually turned out to be a pretty good run, but by and large the novel publications and comics have been their go-tos to keep the license firmly in their pocket. Failed Kickstarters and botched attempts at sequel material aside, HG has spent all this time basically castled, defending their stake from just about everybody that's tried a nibble, like FASA.

>no official subbed Macross Blu-rays
They officially subbed Delta in English.

They just added English subtitles to the Japanese blu-rays (made by the guys at decultureshock.com actually), there was no official English-speaking territories licensor and distributor.

People have been saying, HG is using this to launder money. For fuck's sake, their main business is real estate. This is about as obvious as some successful business backing an art gallery nobody visits.

FUCK SONY

AAAAAAAAHHHHHH

This shit is some very obvious money laundry/tax evasion shit.

I mean, how the fuck someone hold a franchise for that long while not giving a flying fuck about it.

>hatred for big west is so big that they fuck over the American market to flip the finger to them
What's the origin of this?

I wish it was something as cold or calculated as tax evasion or money laundry. The majority of times is just to screw over a competitor.

>The 2015 Fantastic Four movie, infamously dubbed Fant4stic was rushed out to meet yet another deadline for 20th Century Fox to produce a film (following the underperformance of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) or see the characters revert to Marvel. Fox's main concern was not only the potential lost revenue from (higher quality) future releases but also the fact that it would strengthen one of their direct competitors

>Then mouse just buy fox making the whole shit moot and actually damaging the brand.

Yes. The irony didn't go unnoticed on business and entertainment circles.

>Macross
>Tatsunoko's best franchise
Ummmm

The weird thing is that this would almost make sense if Robotech was actually relevant or making money in the West but it fucking hasn't for like two decades now

Please, God, level Harmony Gold with the next earthquake.

user, many times it's not about profiting directly.
It's about something like having a big name on your portfolio of licenses. It looks cool, fills it and may catch the eye of future customers / investors even when they don't buy the thing. Or keeping a competitor away from something that may represent money for it. Or just because it makes bulk on your company's list of assets.

That's why companies like Marvel keep a tight leash on garbage, retarded characters that one of their interns created 20, 30 40 years ago and absolutely no one would give a shit about them, ever.

Go fuck yourself

They're doing a live-action.

there's some shitty robotech comic going on that makes use of blatant art tracing

Attached: RCO015.jpg (1054x1600, 584K)

In recent years, we've got a rise in movies that capitalize on nostalgia: see pokemon, sonic, alita. Considering that sony is getting involved in this shit, they probably think it's time for robotech to rise again.

And they didn't even design their own new Veritechs for that shitty comic, they bought the rights for some fanart design they found on Deviant Art.

They've been "doing a live action" since the 00s

>movies that capitalize on nostalgia
Which haven't been doing particularly well. Only Disney gets nostalgia boner profitable consistently.

Also, they want to create, of course, a cinematic universe with Robotech because those go so well for Hollywood

Yeah, but this is sony. They're retarded and probably gotten smug from piggybacking off the joint venture on spidey. Also, last I heard, venom didn't do too bad either.

I propose we on Yea Forums create a fundraiser to raise enough money to buy out Harmony Gold and sell the license of TO a competent company that will finally bring Macorss to the West.

Tommy Yune's art is better than what we got in Titan Comics' adaption

This is the most likely answer. Everything else is clearly just sand veil for it. Either that or the guy who owns HG really hates Macross for some reason and decided to fuck it up as much as he can.

This is why piracy > legal

It's probably the anime version of patent trolls. Hold copyrights and sue anything that remotely looks similar to it.

>thinks that the mafia lets things go so easily

I thought the Yakuza was smarter than this?
