I agree with everything you said. It was shit. The first 18 or so episodes of the anime were very promising but everything after that including EoE was an absolute shit and it was REALLY hard to care about all the psychological mindfuckery that they were desperatley trying to force to appear "deep". If a show isn't coherent or takes more then 1 viewing to understand you have to take points off from it objectively because no one should be forced to do anything twice to get a full experience. Nobody I bet here "got" the show on their own I'm willing bet without help or reading up on it more.

This is my personal opinion of the show. I liked it but from an artistical point of view. I think the characters development is actually kinda meh, having often some episodes where there is pretty much none and you'll just have shinji saying "I can't do it". The background story has ties with kabbalah, judaism and religion but it's just a shell for the show, there is nothing deep about it. It's just cool. I think the reason most people end up saying it's shit at the end it's not because they don't understand how the show is focused on the characters but because they keep looking for meaning in all that angels, instrumentality and religious references when in fact there is none. I'm pretty sure that the fame initially came from the fact it's direct with the depiction of depression and characters feeling, something that it's not common with the medium, even less when the premise it's a mecha anime. With the show becoming more famous people started thinking it had some deep meaning and it spread around. Try asking any normalfag anime watcher about evangelion and you'll just get the "2deep" response.

at the end of the series, they literally tell you what it all means and then congratulate you. you have to be really fucking dense.
