I think using a couple of movies to redo eva was a great idea.
The original series had a good number of garbage episodes, and it was obviously plagued by production issues. The story definitely would have benefited from a larger budget and a more focused plot.

However, creating a brand new story without any pre-planning was an awful idea.

I read something about the first u.s. screening of 3.0 and how Funi exaggerated the kawoshin stuff in their dub, and as a result people got crazy af. Khara didn't like that and brought in their own translator (the one that did the netflix tl) and made funi redub the movie.

A prime example is giving Ramiel all her forms and her screeching. I do put on the Rebuilds from time to time if I just need something to watch.
That said, 3.33 completely abandoned what Evangelion was about and has manufactured conflict. For EoE he was angry at the fanbase and still struggling with his mental health so he took the opportunity to flesh out the ending as a way to air grievances towards the haters and really dig into the psychological elements all over again.

Since then there's been nothing close to official cknfirmation that struggling with depression has influenced his work on Eva properties. While that shit never really goes away for good there is no reason to assume he's ever altered Rebuild during a depressed episode as a reflection of his mood, and his early messaging about it was downright hopeful.

At most the legal problems with Gainax might explain the long delay in getting it done
