Even when the series is dead ZUN probably won't sell the rights to the series. It was possible to comprehend that he'd allow one if he made all the final creative decisions on the writing and design, but few studios would allow that and at this point he's too old.

There is an officially produced Touhou-related OVA by ufotable but it was only ever shown at a few sanctioned events and will never, EVER be sold or seen again due to ZUN's stranglehold on the rights.
