It's not even "you're just as bad as him," it's that Thorfinn has come to believe the violent, eye for an eye, lifestyle of the Vikings has fucked up their world and wants no part of it. It's not just about personal morality, it's about trying to prove to people that murder and war don't have to be the way you live your life. And he can't prove that if he also goes around killing people. He's not even really trying to change the world, just help some people and then fuck off to America. His whole plan is just to run away from it all, something he states with such conviction people find it outrageous.

The personal segment comes from Thorfinn having spent most of his life as a child soldier. This fucked up his perspective on when violence and murder is appropriate. He's trying to avoid sliding back into the person he used to be. He's less like some wholesome hero trying to avoid tarnishing his pretty morals and more like an alcoholic trying to avoid falling off the wagon.

Vinland Saga now is able to tell the kind of story it is precisely because it spent a long time showing how fucked Thorfinn's life was and how completely void of meaning the Viking raiding and warring lifestyle had for so many. It's a very different tone than most series manage to achieve simply because they don't spend so much time building up how bad things truly are for people before really getting into themes of pacifism.
