He’s shown to be a murderer and a liar all throughout the story then right as he’s about to lose he claims to be doing it all for a good cause and drops a sob story on Johnny. The reader SHOULD be able to tell that, even if Valentine’s story is true, he’s only telling it to save his own skin and not because he’s pursuing a just cause.
