In 2.0 we actually see Asuka was devastated that she couldn't handle Sahaquiel alone. She curls up in the plug after Shinji outruns her and she takes only a backup role. The same thing happened in NGE, we just didn't see the emotional aftereffect.

This is just one example. In general, you can quibble with the exact details of the episodes, but there is no denying that they correspond neatly to important moments for Shinji and Asuka, at a moment when the two of them are "dying" together. Their lives are flashing before their eyes as they are taken into instrumentality.

It's funny because in that scene you posted where Shinji looks wavy, he's actually communicating his first wish to God-Rei: he wants Asuka. God-Rei grabs Asuka's disembodied soul and brings it to him, and they have the kitchen scene together where he gets rejected (& consequently tells Rei to kill everyone, tanging himself and initiating global instrumentality.)

The whole point of Kaworu is that he's too good to be true. No one is just gonna walk up to you one day and say I love you, but that's exactly what Shinji wanted by episode 24.
Shinji did have people in his life that genuinely cared about him, Toji, Asuka, Rei and Misato, but real relationships are complicated and people hurt each other. Initially, Toji beat Shinji up, Asuka treated him like shit and Rei was cold and distant.
And even after moving past all those bad things, other problems arose, problems Shinji couldn't deal with. He felt responsible for the EVA 03 incident and never had the courage to face Toji again. Asuka started developing a better relationship with Shinji but they became estranged after the mind rape. Rei becomes warmer but that eventually results in her sacrificing herself for Shinji.
After all of his human relationships collapse comes Kaworu taking advantage of his fragile state. What gives Kaworu redemption and humanity after manipulating Shinji is his sacrifice, and that in turn is what breaks Shinji.
Basically Kaworu is an asshole, he tried to redeem himself in the end but ended up fucking Shinji up for good, showing that unrealistic expectations and ideals will hurt you much more than reality ever could.

Kawoshin is stil objectively shit though. It managed to worm itself into the status of a fujo icon because it went there first, but it's by far not the best. I fell like it makes a lot of sense for him not come back, even if it is totally depressing.
Mangling Toji is literally the worst thing to ever happen to Shinji by that point. He really did like him a lot and considered him a true friend. Pic related is from episode 20, he puts hurting Toji and killing his mom on the same bag when lashing out at Gendo in his mind.
There is a discarded scene in EoE that shows Kensuke and Toji saying good bye and thanking Shinji, but I feel it's not really necessary and I'm mostly glad it was cut. I do believe Toji should have definitely shown up during instrumentality, but it would be weird to just throw him in there without any other role in the movie. It's complicated really. I just like to imagine a not crippled Toji came out of the LCL sea at some point and him and Shinji finally got to be friends again.

Regardless, the show could acknowledge at least that much but it didn't even do that. For example, just make Shinji say it himself that he doesn't have the courage or something instead of jumping right back into his daddy issues. I would be content with even a single scene of Shinji admitting that he's avoiding it instead of the show avoiding the issue altogether.

It's a good episode if only for how gutrenching it is.

In a way I look at it as being pretty clever and meta because the audience can feel the void and dissonance the same way Shinji does when they disappear from his life just as abruptly after they're being forced to move out. It forces you to empathise with Shinji in that aspect.

Kensuke calls Shinji in ep19 after hearing Shinji has decided to leave NERV post-Toji incident. I think they’re mentioned again at the start of ep24 when Shinji says they’ve evacuated after the Rei self destruct. There was supposed to be a scene in ep24 I think where Kensuke and Toji (in wheelchair) say goodbye to Shinji at the basketball court, and pass a ball to Shinji that just bounces out of his hands. Their absence is supposed to increase the sense of Shinji’s increasing isolation toward the end of the series.
