What happened to this manga?

I have no idea how anyone made it this far in this manga and would still jack off realism like this is some serious historical drama, and not a fantastic story that draws inspiration from history. Boggles the fuckin mind. And what's family friendly about Garm toting a severed head around? Oh right, the no kill rule. Of course.

The manga is basically trying to project toxic 21st century progressivism onto the 11th century.

Not edgy enough anymore. Seriously, that's it. Same problem as Berserk except without the insane hiatuses

Now that the story's gotten slower all the legendary flair it gives to characters as a saga just makes it seem generic.

Everyone loves farmland saga. But after that it became shit.

Baltic sea arc sucks. Helda sucks. The story should have ended after farmland and thorfinn goes home. Farmland ties so well with the beginning of the story. Baltic sea arc just kinda shits the bed. If the next arc blows I think am going to drop it. Such a shame.

I forgot when but I remeber him saying how he wanted to change the overall tone of the story so his new son could enjoy it. It was in one of the pre chapter interviews I wish I could find it but if that's true it would explain alot.

He did but it's not like he plans on showing the manga to him when he's 8 or something. He just wants to make sure the manga has a wholesome message so his son can appreciate it when he becomes an adult. That's always been the case since Thorfinn's flashback. The prologue isn't exactly kid-friendly anyway.

Hild kinda ruin the series for me. She really serves no purpose other than to limit Thorfinn.
And Thorfinn doesn't even need her because his mentality is already at a pacifist stage.

That's seems to be the general consensus. She railroads Thorfinn to go pacifist on pain of death instead of maybe sometimes losing it and feeling regret or discovering a compromise. It's awful.

Farmland saga was despised due to the massive tone shift and thorfinn changing so suddenly. It's better in retrospect and when you can marathon it but still lame.

Even though it was hinted that Thorfinn would turn into a giant vagina, the manga was a lot more fun to read when it was askeladd and ultraviolence.

Might start with more recent events and flash back the the prologue?

Either they a) start with the flashback (kinda dumb in my opinion since the first two chapters are a good introduction you are already supposed to know that Thors dies beforehand) or b) they speed through the first two chapters with incredible speed or c) they do it like in the manga but Thorfinn has some short Halfdan dream in the beginning or something

Your taste is terrible but this is 100% correct, the reason why Farmland Saga gets a bad rap on Yea Forums is that this place has been around long enough to buy a lot into the hype of the PLANETES guy making a new awesome series about Vikings waging war and then slamming the brakes as hard as possible for a couple of volumes after Askeladd's death. As a ton of literally who serfs and guards were introduced we couldn't really see how the story would eventually tie into the larger plot and Knut's intentions, except by the end of it it's really enjoyable and sets the foundations for Thorfinn's party's journey.
It makes little sense to despise Farmland Saga in 20fucking19.

Stopped reading after farmland saga arc. Farmland was great but didnt like the direction the story was going afterwards. Will watch the anime and might pick up the manga someday if it gets interesting.

I miss Edgeland Saga, you can jerk your "mature" "seinen" manga all you want, but Askeladd and Thorfinn's obsession with him made this manga

It's not about characterization, this manga has just become genuinely poorly written, it's lost all sense of tension and excitment, it's battle shounen shit tier, with moral fagging mc, and characters yelling attack names, lolsorandom comedy, and masking bad writing and passing it off as comedy.
It's just incredibly uninteresting, poorly written and silly now.

Serious question for those that are still with the manga if theu disliked the farmland paradigm shift.
What do you thunk this story is about?
And if you are in it for the cool action and slaughter scenes please do not reply. I honestly think that this is a wonderfully built story with a huge problem in storytelling priorities, it comes out once in a blue moon and it stills wastes time with pointless demonstrations of the central point that is much more well pointed by the story of thorfinn himself. Basically i think that the problem with this arc is not the lack of edge, but the complete tone deafness on some ocasions by the author.

the thing is, i dont dislike farmland itself, thats the peak of the story, it's just so clear he didn't really think of anything beyond that.

The story has just fallen into pure battle shounen tropues, equip with the mc who doesn't kill, but it "sooooo badass woah", the cheerleading squad of secondary characters, who constantly remind us, how "woooah badass" the mc is. Even hild purely functions in the story for this reason, as we are forced to take thorfins side and hope that he impresses her or w.e, whilst she's completely unreasonable.

There's a real lack of tension, excitement and or interesting character dynamics, they are either all dead, or have been absent from the story for so long that i just dont care about them anymore, like the prince.

The single most interesting and longest running plot line, was thorfins eventual confronting of his fathers killer, and it was easily the most unstatisfactory thing i've ever read, right down to the tone of how it was handled by the writer, or the "solution" thorfin gave in the end.
After that, there's nothing left in the story that i cared about.

Vinland Saga has always been about the nature and futility of violence. Every arc has served this purpose.

No to be honest now with the Casca awakening and the confirmation that Griffith owns the body of Guts son, this is a thousand times more interesting than little heart problems in Viliand
