There's this thing in Pro Wrestling called the seven-year rule, basically just means that after a few years you can reuse old ideas since your fanbase has changed (old people leaving, new ones joining) and won't notice and the ones that have stuck around have either forgotten or don't care about the recycling. Alice ensures that the media only gets a filtered version of the incident.

Then GoPri for sure. I like how Haruka has almost inmediatly an emotional stake into the conflict with DysDark because of her past ties with Kanata and how much his encouragement meant to her.

Dokidoki's is indeed extremely good, the cold open rules and I love that Mana doesn't fight at all in the whole episode. It also sets up the entire main cast really efficiently and lays out the plot hooks for the whole first arc with Joe, Sword, and the whole fallen kingdom thing. You almost never see Precure use its time that effectively, and it does while maintaining great pacing and still finding ways to develop the characters' relationships and foreshadow their personal problems. There's some snappy choices of direction too, like the subtle pan over to the surprise second victim just before the eyecatch.

HaCha's first episode was pretty good too, it hits a lot of similar beats as Dokidoki's but with an arguably even cooler setting.

It's not official or anything, but I personally think you can see pretty clear shifts happen with Fresh and GoPri as the "border" series. So Futari wa - GoGo would be first era, Heartcatch - HaCha would be second, and Maho to now would be third. You could argue about where to put Fresh and GoPri if you don't like leaving them on the border; I'd probably put Fresh in first era and GoPri in third if you pushed me.

It's been a while but wasn't Heartcatch's first episode pretty dark? I mean HC in general is pretty dark but I remember the first episode especially being the case.

It's just something about the style, like direction, pacing, plotting... It's hard to put into words without rewatching everything and doing proper criticism, but something like the forward momentum is different? In first era, you could show like 80% of the episodes in any order and it wouldn't make a difference, whereas second era started to put more emphasis on the characters growing alongside the plot developments. Then third is like a mix, where the characters don't really progress but the plot definitely does.

It's kinda all bullshit though, because by what I just said Smile feels more like first and Star Twinkle should be in second. So I dunno, I'll have to think more. But it's definitely something I've felt while watching year to year since Fresh but I was actually watching Super Hero Time for Decade at first, I didn't actually faithfully catch Precure every week until partway into Heartcatch.

Dokidoki stands out from nearly every other Precure season for the exact opposite reason. Over half of its episodes are shot in ways that frame someone other than Mana as the protagonist. We hear the other Cures' thoughts, we follow them home alone, we see what they see and are set up to feel what they feel. Mana never takes away from their development or screentime; in many cases, it's the opposite, with Mana fulfilling the role of a supporting character to support whatever plot the character's conflict is shown through. Good examples of this are the episode Rikka is jealous of Macopy or the episode Aguri learns not to be so bossy at the festival. In both cases, Mana has way, way fewer lines than a so-called main character should; if you would claim she sucks up screen time, you're simply lying. People here like to call other Pinks "good leaders" when they say "hey guys don't give up" in battle, but Mana leads in the way a truly great Pink should: by supporting her team's development.

Characters in GoPri don't have arcs, because arcs are lines. They just teleport from start to end without earning any actual development, then teleport back when the episode's over so they can learn the same lesson again in two months or so.

And to add to that, King Jikochuu genuinely cared about Regina. With Eas and Twilight as precedents, I expected Regina to be yet another tragic figure who was loyal to someone who didn't deserve it. I was very glad to see that King Jikochuu was Regina's real father, and that he truly cared about his daughter even in his corrupted state.

All in all, I enjoyed the King's backstory, Marie Ange's decision, and how that decision tied into Regina and Aguri's characters. The whole thing far surpassed my expectations.

I quite liked that element too. The only thing I would have liked is if one of the pieces of Ange's heart -- probably Aguri, since Regina was already accounted for -- had some lingering attachment to Macopy. Not that it should have been there in what we got, since they made it clear that Ange probably didn't even Makoto had a name other than Sword, but god dammit there was no need to write the story to be so cruel to poor Macopy like that in the first place.

I'm the user you originally replied to. I don't like your idea for two reasons: 1) If Aguri isn't related to the Princess, it wouldn't make sense for her to be Cure Ace and to be so strong. Aguri wouldn't have any ties to the main story either, and the reason why she and Regina immediately hated each other would be gone too. You could write off Aguri from the show at that point. 2) If King Jikochuu wasn't Regina's father, Regina's main motivation to act in the way she did would disappear. Everything Regina did, she did out of love for her father, including the very hard decision of parting ways with Mana. If King Jikouchuu wasn't Regina's father, Regina wouldn't have experienced any big conflicts, and she would have been a much less interesting character as a result.

Well I don't see how the princess was obligated or Makoto had to know about the princess's love interest plus fiance in the first place. If anything it's one of those things Makoto could've just ask and get a simple yes or no answer or she could've just found out another way. Regardless even princesses have their own private lives and don't have to tell everyone including their closest friends or loves ones on what's going on with them.

Everyone is, but Precure almost always is something in the first half and something on the second. Usually the first half is amazing and then proceds to shit the bed in the second half, Altrough that depends on your own view of that season.

She is bored of life because her talents create a divide between her and other people, the fact she is as talented as she is kind of makes most people place her in a pedestal that makes it difficult for her to create genuine connections. This all leads her to do tease and at times, outright toy and manipulate with people, since it's the only way she can "close in the distance" so to speak with the people around her that she knows of.

It's mostly up to your personal interpretation, user.
You can call it apathy, depression, nihilism, self-loathing. It's probably a bit of everything.
Yukari is the closest thing Precure has to having an adult Cure as part of the main cast.

I liked Yukari a bunch (fuck, that episode where she gives Rio that sob story was hilarious), but yeah, I think the show could have been perfectly fine without her. I don't think she really detracted too much though -- my primary issue with KiraKira is the really poor phoned in fights that keep interrupting my fun baking anime. There's some good battles (all of Julio's were pretty memorable), but there's so much that's just phoned in.

Lads, I haven't watched any PreCure in a while. I've seen Doki, Fresh, Suite and Heartcatch, and I remember watching Smile for a bit while it was airing jesus christ how long has it been.
I don't know if I could choose a favorite amongst them, but considering that the thing I remember most vividly is Setsuna/Eas joining the gang and I still listen to the Fresh's first ED even today, I guess Fresh stuck with me the most. Though I also remember liking Heartcatch's transformations. God, I even remember Blossom's "transformation phrase" -- 大地に咲く一輪の花, or whatnot.

Anyway, how're the newer seasons? "Newer" meaning anything after... whichever was the latest of the ones I've seen.
