Zero is far, far superior by every possible measure.

Second one was pretty good, but for the most part, everyone involved with the things were not familiar with/fans of Godzilla, and were told to "do your own thing!" One would think 1998 taught people a lesson, but maybe they were just feeling really generous after what a success Shin Godzilla was.

Zero doesn't get into the head enough of any of it's characters. FSN might be an eroge for autists to fantasize about having cute little waifus, but it at least provides in depth character analysis and inner monologues (not just of Shirou btw). You aren't ever shown what or how a character is feeling in Zero because rather than a handful of characters to zoom in on it has the role of protagonist split between like 10 characters. It's the same annoying shit that defines a lot of western trash these days like GoT. Stories aren't made better by adding a false sense of complexity from having more characters and arching convoluted story structures. It doesn't make the characters themselves complex which is the funnest part of reading/watching stories. It was Gen's intention to do this btw, it was a bad move in my opinion and it makes me just not care about any of the characters of Zero. The best parts of Zero were the characters that were already established in FSN, except for Rider team.

Zero has characters that shuffle off the mortal coil with little to no development I'll give you that but it doesn't compromise the narrative or rob you of entire scenes like the kings debate that exist almost wholly to characterize the players. It inherits its setting from FSN and so it's bound to have a certain size of cast that it needs to either spends multiple novels developing or weed out. It's obvious what his decision was.
What I won't give you is that Nasu gets into the head of his characters except for in the most literal, first person soliloquy way. It is not an example of solid writing.

Yeah its fucking lazy writing. Nasu wrote an entire fucking city into existence with HA. Shirou's little life in that city is detailed as fuck for a main character. The way Nasu fills in even some of the most mundance information about Fuyuki has got to count for something. We know almost next to nothing about most of the characters in Zero compared to the amount of random shit we know about even one character that we see in the VNs. The characters aren't there to be interesting they are there to fill some sort of role Gen wrote that is supposed to be some great tragedy. They don't draw an ounce of sympathy from the viewers unless they are characters from Fate/Stay Night. I couldn't give a flying fuck about literally half the characters from Zero. I love almost every character (yes even Shinji is entertaining in weird ways) from the original VN.

It's better than not doing it at all. And its nice to see him try and do that because we don't get that sort of experience from many anime/manga/VN. It was interesting watching him try and show us "this is what a yandere/kuudere/hero/chuuni would be feeling and thinking". That shit doesn't work in anime adaptations at all. They tried to do that in HF part 2 but failed frankly. The scene where Sakura was slipping into full yandere was gripping as fuck in the VN but in the anime she just made some weird faces in the mirror.

I'm sure a better writer could have done a better job at showing us the inside of the minds of characters in similar situations, but Nasu managed to fit that in nicely thanks to the VN format of interludes and scene transitions.

All still making FSN the better of the two. Gen couldn't even manage to work something engaging like that in Zero BADLY. He didn't fucking bother with it at all.

He was told it was unsalvageable and that he needed to start again from scratch, and the final result is a huge chunk of the supporting cast dying for dumb reasons while the villain literally eats her servant before Lelouch pretty much forfeits because he thought smartphones were cool. I will, however, admit that Spartacus' death was really great.

More heavy handed PoV Tell don't Show sequences do, as I've already conceded, literally flesh out more of the narrative but they do not make the VN more enjoyable while doing it. Then you probably don't value learning a lot about characters that valuable. Anime is almost all about the characters and the story is almost less important. It's a weird part of how anime works. Aniem was and still is commercialized and heavily reliant on marketing the merchandise. Thus the characters themselves needed to be able to be marketed. FSN is designed to make you fall for the characters romantically and so it crutches on ridiculous amounts of detail for the characters, because you can't just fall in love with a character from a poster, you need detail and plot development to flesh out who the characters are so that the player can basically fall in love for them. This is how anime fucking works at it's core essentially. It some sort of escapism it isn't healthy.

Fate/Stay Night does a really good fucking job at making you fall for the cute anime girls, and it does this so well by giving us a shit ton of detail about the characters. This doesn't work when you try and make 10 individual characters the main character. You just see [DESIGN_1] fighting/arguing with [DESIGN_2] like with almost all of Zero. The only truly interesting characters are the ones from FSN, and it's only because we have learned to care about them dearly. This basically boils down to the 3 main heroines from Fate btw. Who the fuck waifus Irisviel or Kiritsugu's Side Chick? The girls suck, the guy characters are old assholes, and none of the characters become sympathy inducing until after they are being edgy faggots with each other.

I dunno about that, user. I personally thought Kirei, Gil, Kiritsugu, Kariya, Rider + Waver, and even Caster + Ryuunosuke to be some of the most compelling characters in the series. Certainly Kirei and Gil were much more interesting in Zero than in FSN imo. Sure the girls in FSN were way better but Zero's adult characters were much more interesting overall.
