Kaworu's thematic role in Rebuild is to represent Shinji's hope (even Anno himself confirmed that). Right now Kaworu is physically dead and Shinji is broken. It's pretty fitting regarding the theme. Question is just to where Shinji's character move from that. And depending on that Kaworu possibly returns in some capacity. But unlike original series Kaworu is no longer set to be Shinji's salvation. So he is not the one that Shinji needs at this moment.

The entire point of Rebuild is to turn Eva into a multi-entry franchise like Gundam and leaving it to other people. I'm fully convinced Shinji will be erased from existence. It fits with Anno leaving the franchise and the sponsors's wishes of centering on characters that can sell merchandise. Otherwise 3.0 would be pointless considering it was 100 minutes about how much Shinji sucks, everything wrong with the world is his fault and his fault only (forget Gendo, Seele and the Nerv staff that gave a doomsday machine to an emotionally unstable kid without telling him what it was) and he shouldn't even be born.

I think I gave up trying to understand 3.33 by the time Shinji and Kaworu got to Terminal Dogma, and Shinji went to retrieve the Spear of Longinus. Not completely truth. He is author of original scripts and always had final word about what will be in movie. Although it is true that he allows other to bring their ideas on place. For example ending of 2.0 was Enokido's idea. Anno had Rei to die there in similar manner as in episode 23. But others felt, that such ending would be too depressing for cliffhander so Enokido brought idea of Shinji's saving Rei. Still Anno completely accepted this ending.
