Oh, don't get me wrong - it's made exceptionally well. But the scenes that combine several different animation styles will always look distracting - at least for me.

It is a soulless cash grab user, we're 3/4 into the thing and so far every bit of soul the show has had was removed. Characters are shallow husks of their former selves, their backstories and psychology telegraphed in a few bulletpoints. The "more" syndrome, tonnes of pointless fanservice. It's like evangelion made specifically to cater to otakus tastes to sell merch.

I feel the first and second movies were really good at best and palatable at worst.

Then there's 3.0, which will probably make you more frustrated in it's direction than anything else.

That being said it was the Rebuilds that got me into checking out NGE in the first place so it's not as bad as people make it out to be.

2.0 is the best one for that reason. It is the destruction of Eva. It the second act of Eva (the strongest part of the show and the one held most dear by audiences) as seen by those who haven't seen Eva in over a decade. It's the anti-Eva in every sense. Everything about it is wrong.
Shinji is not acting like Shinji. Shikinami is not Asuka. Pokapoka Rei is not Rei.
And Mari, Mari is a crime, she's the worst character. That's why I can't stop thinking about her. She's wrong. Mari doesn't belong in Eva.

She's a true outsider. She doesn't act anything like anyone part of the story does. She's whimsical, she doesn't really give a shit about anything, she's just there to have a good time.
And her presence changes everything in the story.

Mari is both the best and the worst character in Eva and I will be horribly disappointed with 3.0 + 1.0 because I know she won't get as much screentime as she needs.

There is no way he adheres so strictly to the original structure, while also changing things in such an obviously, aggressively wrong way.
Structurally the films are a very clear-cut retelling of the show, you can see this clearly, because you can divide the original story into 4 distinct acts (1-6, 7-19, 21-24 and 25/26) and the plan for these films was always 4 films. And if you actually watch the films, they adhere incredibly strictly to this 4 act structure. Even the third one is a clear and clean retelling of 21-24, with the pieces shuffled around a little bit and the backdrops slightly swapped out.
It becomes very transparent what Anno is doing, if you actually watch the new films with the corresponding episodes in mind.
At first it's hard to notice what he's doing, because it looks like a straight remake, but the third one gives it away.
I suggest you watch 1-6 followed by the first film, then 7-19 followed by the second film, then episodes 20-24 and the third film. And as you are doing that, pay attention to the things that are different. Especially in the second film and middle section of Eva.

A lot of thought went into Mari and obviously, she is they key to all of this, Anno said it himself:

Mari's only purpose for being a "female pilot character" is selling merchandise as she is barely a character to begin with. She has no meaningful relationships and no meaningful interactions. She's saying words but they don't have any meaning, she's making faces but they don't have any meaning. There is no meaning to this character other than gainax bounce and making bank. "I wanted things to be different!" is just a cheap cover story although one thing is true, she does feel foreign because Anno failed to integrate her within the story and other characters. In the end things stay the same because Mari hardly affects anything or anybody within the story in any meaningful way.

2.0 was not mediocre, it was quite good. A very well made film.

3.3 was good in my opinion, even brave, and went deeper into elements of Eva only hinted at. The pilots never growing up was a brilliant idea, Shinji being a manchild coming back to the world more than a decade later was brilliant.

But I still can't accept all the plotholes, and how at least one faction is lying, and it's probably Kaworu, and nothing makes sense, because Shinji didn't cause the near impact and there is no reason for him to hated.

I don't think Anno was mad that people liked the characters, he himself likes Asuka and Misato a lot. He was angry that people became, as you said, OBSESSED with the characters and used them as a catalyst for their escapist fantasies, which NGE spent all of its running time warning against.

It's also the entire point of the contrast between Rebuilds 2.22 and 3.33.

Take the Rebuilds as another story all together. Another time loop. Another anime with different characters.
Yui has another surname and different objectives. Asuka has a different surname and a different personality.

It can only move without a power source when berserked which is pretty unreliable. The S2 Engine turns it into a literal god and allows it to move without a power source on a consistent basis.

i tried watching the first rebuild but the severe drop in animation quality (random shit being poorly CGI'd like the cars and the elevator floor counter even though most of it is traces of the original frames) caused me to drop it shortly after the EVA-01 Berserk scene. Nothing is really given the same room to breathe and small inconsistencies are not addressed in this retelling of the same events. Am I a brainlet? Was this the intention? What's the point of intending to make a shoddy product to send a message? Is Anno just wasting everybody's time? Eva ep1-26 and EOE have absurd amounts of soul and are generally fantastic but I simply cannot tolerate the sheer laziness and poor direction the rebuild took.

I'd watch 2.22 and 3.33 desu. 1.11 was my least favorite of the Rebuilds since it is literally a direct frame to frame redoing of the source material besides for the Ramiel fight. You SHOULD finish 1.11 just because of how fucking good the Ramiel fight is in this version.

Once you start getting into 2.22 and 3.33 and things start to change and you possibly start to see what Anno is going for in terms of a meta commentary, you may find it a lot more enjoyable. Generally I liked the animation a lot in the Rebuilds, but as you said, there are some CGI scenes that look kind of shitty littered throughout.
