The civil war was done in flashbacks in the manga, it has always been a story of revenge and monster hunt in the first place, with more focus on the background of the individual soldiers.
For some reason, they decided to put all of those in the 1st episode as some sort of introduction. I guess I can see the reason, and the logic behind this, but to be desu I think it was better and more dynamic with the flashbacks, that were giving more impact to the story and the struggles of the characters.

The whole first episode open with a big exposition dump is a trait of shlocky LN adaptations, especially the obnoxious magic academy ones, so this show isn't doing itself any favors by imitating that form. Especially not if the manga actually opened with something more palatable. I like a cold opening better, show me an interesting scene with an important character that builds suspense and interest, make me want to know more about them and the world. Then later on you can explain it to sate my curiosity.

I forgot this show was supposed to have monsters in it and when I started watching it I thought it was actually just going to be a civil war anime and was pumped. OST seemed fitting for the setting, animation quality wasn't bad. Soldiers are seeing other soldiers getting fucked after being ordered to siege a castle.

Common fantasy writing technique, although in this case so poorly executed that even Yea Forumsutists can't believe it.
It usually goes like this:
You throw one or more red shirts into the grinder, have them die in interesting ways, in order to demonstrate to your readers how super dangerous the monster/trap/enemy of the week is. This way every mongo in the readership understands that your heroes are facing a real threat and are in real danger. Makes you sympathise with the heroes, cheer for them, stuff like that.
This particular show here is shounen material aimed at 12 yo losers, so the author went five steps further and immediately established that the main characters are superhumanly strong (and bulletproof) superheroes, compared to whom the common mortal is barely more than a fly. This part worked as intended, but a proper writer can do it without leaving gaping plot holes and logical inconsistencies behind.
A (slightly) more elegant approach would have been a breakout attempt from the besieged fortress, overrunning the besiegers, having them flee in panic and die like mayflies. Then the heroes approach and turn the tide of the battle just by being there. Cliche as fuck too, but at least not THAT bad.
