I just finished the series and EoE and what was the whole point of Instrumentality in the first place? Was it just because people are lonely or whatever?

Instrumentality means people lose all conscious thought and become one with everyone. Rejecting instrumentality means being alone and accepting the possibility of being hurt, but also the conscious choice of accepting others despite being different

The point was to become a god. Adam meets Lilith (Gendo shoves Adam hand into Rei). In the Eva lore there are original gods called Ancestral Race which sent seeds across the universe. The original gods had the unlimited abilities of both Lilim and Angels. One lance and one seed for each planet so that the inhabitants would not become such beings. Earth, likely by mistake, received both an Adam and Lilith egg. The lances are a fail safe designed to make one hibernate in such a case. In earths case the lance shut down Adam and his descendants. The science team reawakened Adam and his descendants came looking for Lilith. This was the great concern of Nervs for the angels reaching Terminal Dogma. Seele wanted to create god on their terms not the angel’s. Gendo wanted to create it on his own terms. It ended up falling on Shinji to navigate due to his connection with Rei/Yui/Unit1
I always got the impression that the Angels were trying to prevent Third Impact because none of them seemed certain contact with an Angel would cause another major event
Replace Yui with "narcissist" since she wanted to use Eva 01 to live forever and abandoned her family

I said to myself that I wasn't like Shinji but at the end i'm the same as him. Friendless. Friends/people trying to help me and then they forget him/me and don't care about him/me because I'm unable to understand them and myself. Weak. It was like Rei and Kaworu were his and my friends/psychiatrists. At the end I really enjoyed the moment I was with them and with my friends. I will treasure them.
