I've always thought it meant nothing. Out of all of the control center characters, Aoba was the least developed. The show didn't want to introduce a character who the audience didn't know, or show him seeing a character whom his connection to would have been better expounded upon (but they didn't), so they just went the lazy way and showed him getting tanged by a bunch of Reis.
This is further supported by the fact that Rei was supposed to take the form of someone that you loved, allowing you to welcome your death. Aoba however is just seen cowering with fear.

I have a question. I'm thinking whether I should watch NGE or not. I see at least 4 or 5 NGE threads present in the catalog at all times. I've already read manga like Vagabond,Real, Planetes, 20th Century Boys, Kaiji,Akira, some Tezuka manga and few other popular shonen. So far I've seen a mixed response to NGE . Some people treat it as the gold standard, but I think it's a death note/Code Geass like situation. Teenagers think it's otherworldly but sensible people can find the flaws in it.
Sorry for the wall of text, but does/a/ recommend watching Evangelion to someone who's watched better stuff before?
