Please understand that the video games are related to the manga, whereas the manga is largely independent from the light novels and the anime. While the games are original plots, only some manga aren't adapted from the light novels. These are Medieval Mayhem, Knight of the Aqualord, Light-Magic, and Hourglass of Falces. Medieval Mayhem is Rui's artwork, Aqualord and Light-Magic are based on his designs, and Falces is largely an ecchi manga so it's drawn differently.

Please don't get the wrong idea, I really enjoy telling people all about Slayers; it allows me to pretend like my near-encyclopedic knowledge of it is actually useful! I don't view it as spoonfeeding, and don't feel bad if you're misinformed. Almost half of all Slayers-related content hasn't been released in the West, or anywhere outside of Japan for that matter.

The series originated as a tabletop game, sorta.

That would be Record of the Lodoss War (among others). Hajime Kanzaka first envisioned Slayers in high school with Luna being the protagonist, and Lina being her younger clone. Both of them would be in a steampunk setting, and Lina would be neurotically obsessed with machinery. It wasn't until later (probably when DnD and its clones started blowing up) that he changed the setting to sword and sorcery, aged up Lina, and focused on her instead of her older sister.
Later on Big Eyes, Small Mouth took the Slayers setting and created a d20 system for it.

We're like this because there's nothing divisive in the fandom, just a large appreciation for the characters and world Hajime's created. I guess the only thing people can really argue is who Lina "should" be shipped with, but it's pretty much established Gourry's hitched to her for life.
