While the 2003 was cool for the first half, it went off on an extremely ridiculous tangent even by quirky anime standards. It is more reason why anime development should be held off until the original source material is at least 75% complete.

Because the original anime never really got to the point in the story shown in Brotherhood in that second image. It split around the time Greed showed up, and it was only later in the series that we really got into Ed growing up.

Manga has one intended arc followed by an indefinite stall until the series is eventually cancelled and wrapped up in a couple of chapters.
Waiting is betting against the series and investing money in it at the same time. Of the not waiting strategies, writing an original ending is best. There's no need to double down on a Bleach like strategy by adding filler to an already padded source only to follow it into cancellation.
