This is going to sound generic but what makes this story good is good characters, good fights, and solid writing. Ragna's desperation leading to him going after Artemesia prematurely and ruining Crimson's plans makes sense even though you'd have expected him to go with his/her flow. And framing it around the flashback of his future encounter with them highlights just how much hatred he has for them. Starlia being a tsundere isn't a new idea in fiction, but she's so freaking adorable with her emotional shifts you can't help but laugh.

And every fight has been well illustrated and paced. This mangaka really has a solid grasp on their story and his skills. Artemesia is a smug cunt who gets taken down a peg and Ragna putting the fear of god into her was an amazing moment among many other ones.

Maybe it's because I haven't checked the raws but why do people treat this arc's side characters as cannon fodders meant to die eventually ? So far the manga has been relatively kind to the characters that were named and had a bit of characterisation. Yeah the dragons hutners died but I don't think we even knew their name, or at least they weren't as developed as the princess' crew.
