The only thing that tells me is that companies feel that Super Sonico is a safer marketing choice. While sales comparisons between two comparative works are a good objective indicator of popularity, the push that a character receives isn't necessarily proportionate to that character's draw. That's especially true with someone who's a departure from the established norm and a polarizing figure like Pochaco.
If you want a prime example, look at Cattleya from Queen's Blade. If you were going off of her official appearances, you'd never guess that she was the most popular.
