Why is it so difficult for mangaka to write an underdog story without turning the protagonist into a secret übermensch?

One of those is well written and was never intended to be an "underdog", you just put him there to bait (You)s

sage

Gamma Male authors and their inexorable projection of their Secret King Fantasy into their stories.

Ahem.

HxH was never an underdog story you stupid fucking cretin

hxh has the gayest mc ive ever seen and you have to be sipping soilent to watch that shit.

I only recognize gon, so this thread isn't for me to take part in
bye-bye

But Togashi already did that once.

Not to mention some of the
most repetitive and tedious fights, I've seen.
Have you seen the webms?

>Underdog
one of them beat high ranking official with 2 hours of training a forbidden technique and magic,in the first chapter.

gon some dork in an outfit you would expect some gay to wear huge boots that look like stripper boots and short shorts

God was a literal nobody beating up some of the strongest fighters in the world. The only thing known about his dad was that he was a hunter.

HES A BORDERLINE SOCIOPATH BRO

Hello VD. You watch anime now?

Gon is an underdog and stays one though.
His "powerup" was merely corruption

Who is this show trying to appeal to again?

Because it's all about self-insertion for pathetic losers (especially the nardofans) and a big fat finger to their dad and mom. "Why AREN'T YOU A SUPER RICH GENIUS FAMOUS instead of a pleb!??! I could be living easy life now, but no. I wish I had parents like NARDO'S so that destiny could suck my cock, HAMPH"

ASTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

question for non-spanish speaking people (non-subhumans) above 14 years of age:
do you guys seriously keep watching stuff like boku no hero academia even after realizing in the first episode it is intended for small children who are in the growing phase and need easy-to-understand entertainment media for their yet in development brains?

How is Gon an underdog? He was doing superhuman shit all throughout the Hunter Exam because of how he was raised in the forest. Gon only appears to be an underdog because all his opponents are experienced and highly skilled, that's why he rarely wins battles.

How do you expect to defeat an OP villain?

>still true nobody till this day

how such "generic" series can be so based?

>rampant individualism
>Great Man theory
>black and white conflict
Reminder all shounen, and most anime, is for little kids.

Underdogs don't work in a format where the story is serialized weekly and takes 15 years to finish. If the MC stays an underdog for 15 years that means there was no progression.

>reminder this thing you like is for little kids, all included, no difference between them, of course I'm the exception, I'm still here in this place for way more peculiar reasons

inb4 who are you quoting
fuck off and go read your new one piece academia of superheroes excrement of a chapter

>inb4 who are you quoting
newfag

Everyone wants to be special. Battle shonen are power fantasies for children. The "underdog" stuff is just to make the characters superficially relatable. Almost all heroes ever have been special snowflakes in one way or another. Gon isn't because he scarcely qualifies as a hero.

samefagging

>wears a shirt that exposes his midriff
>green stripper boots
>shorts shorts
>gay over excited face
Gayest battle shounen mc i've ever seen. Hands down.

...

Maybe author did not try to make underdog story but you are so shitty person that you rely on being able to identify with loser protagonist in media you consume

LOL Gon was never an underdog.

Read Tomorrow's Joe

shit is mad gay

Attached: chad warden.jpg (265x278, 15K)

I dunno, the author for HXH outright said Gon was a 1/1000000 talent. His overall goal was rather simple too, he just wanted to find his old man. Naruto wanted to be King Ninja and Deku is destined to be the greatest hero of all time.

All of that made sense when he was fishing in Chapter 1. It is just that Togashi is too lazy to give him a non-fishing outfit.

>was weaker than rival at first
>bested rival by training and experiencing more combat
>rival gets powers overpowers him and cuts his arm
>survived seeks revenge and got a fairly balanced power to fight against overpowered opponents

I just hope Miura gives him the death he deserves

Underrated post. Heroes are rarely the underdogs. It tends to be some other character who few would seriously bet on to a competition. In fact quite a number of people tend to shit on these characters because they don't like a weakling/loser, though others may come around to them eventually.

>Gon
>underdog
What?

A chuunin is not a high ranking official you retard.

It is the definition of mid ranking.

It is a high rank and is mid rank at the same time.

No.

Chuunin is mid rank.
Gen, chuu, jou. It literally means base, mid and high.

Gon was never an underdog.

Because underdogs are underdogs for a reason, and social momentum tends to compound over time. The goal of glory and heroism isn't usually attainable by genuine shit lords. In order for generic MC to actually accomplish all those grand feats and wind up a winrar, they need to have a game-breaking gimmick that let's them crutch their way above what would usually be their station.

tldr you can either have a genuine underdog or a happy ending, but usually never both unless you're an elder god writer

Because it's hard

Shonentier

Because no great story has had the characters be complete nobodies

That """"""""""underdog"""""""""" also happens to have a near limitless supply of chakra that allows him to use the move so easily in the first place. Why do you think the move was forbidden in the first place?

>Why do you think the move was forbidden in the first place?
reverse harem no jutstu

Then why do you call him an underdog? Must a character always fill into an archetype or either underdog or overdog, mixes aren't possible?

>Then why do you call him an underdog?
Do you not know what quotation marks mean?
>Must a character always fill into an archetype or either underdog or overdog, mixes aren't possible?
The series makes a huge point of trying to present Naruto as an underdog, when he's actually the most special guy around since day one

>special guy since day one
>tries to portray him as an underdog

You are contradicting yourself user.

The point is that Naruto is an underdog as in social and mental stats, not physical or talentwise exactly.

I'm saying it tries and fails to present him as an underdog. Kid's got all the chakra and stamina he needs thanks to fox hax

you mean like all the western underdog stories?

Gon never was an underdog and still loses a lot more in comparasing to Deku and Naruto. Ironic

Attached: pretend that i'm the enemy.png (1066x1600, 1.43M)

A character doesn't need to fit into an exact mold of anarchetype, that's what Naruto is. It's failing only in our headcanon because we want him to be an underdog, when in actuality he isn't. The first episode must provide you with enough evidence on that.

>turning
Gon was always an Übermensch, and Naruto was always an Untermensch.
Nothing changed with them along the way.
No idea what that thing in the center is, though.

A lazy faggot who got turned into an Übermensch without earning it

Deku is far from being perfect at using OfA, unlike what we know of AM that had perfect use of it almost immediately. I'm not saying Deku is the best out there, but at least we can see his growth is there and is not fast.

OH MY SEVEN QUIRKS

Still reading my hero but why is Deku a bad underdog? Lost the sports event, took forever for him to learn how to use One for All in a way that didn't break his bones, got shit on by Sir Night and was only hired because they're both All Might fanboys.

Because their the MAIN CHARACTER. They have to be a special Snowflake or else they will basically be NPCs.

Also it's just the way Jump is structured. They have to keep readers interested, so they'll keep giving characters powers up, villains literally have to stronger than the next, and the stakes has to be higher.

Fist of the north star isn't it the top tier? You fucked up boy

Attached: tfk0nbY.gif (534x360, 2.58M)

Since when was Gon ever pitched as an underdog? If you are gonna bait at least try to make sense.

>OH MY SEVEN QUIRKS
This he now can win fight endevour or All For One

>Boruto above Naruto
You could've at least tried to make the bait subtle

I think you might be projecting a bit too hard, homo. Happy pride month.

They're power fantasies. I tried to write up a basis for a shounen with lore and a power system etc for fun today and I realised if the MC isn't a special snowflake and/or doesn't have at least a few interesting aspects about themselves and their ability there isn't really anything you can do.

Because they want the payoff of the MC conquering something far too quickly and then don't know where to take the story from there so they just kinda exist in limbo of pretending the MC is still the underdog

This. I watched an anime where they made the MC have the skillset of a talentless background character who would slowly improve over time but everybody complained about him and wanted to know why they wouldn't give him a convenient powerup already

Attached: anime_key_visual.png (878x1248, 1.68M)

Deku is a bad underdog because he got handed down the best power, has all the best mentors handed down to him.

He was okay until O MY SEVEN QUIRKS

What are you talking about? Everyone on Yea Forums who reads World Trigger fucking loves that guy.

Gon was never an underdog though
he was a Goku clone like Luffy, aka high test form the start

It's honestly very difficult to write a story like that very well. Someone who's truly average or even under that would have a difficult time accomplishing anything of note.

WT is the best example I can think of when it comes to MC underdogs, but a few things about how the series is setup helps, for one Osamu is still lucky for having OP friends like Yuma and Chika.

Attached: AAAAHH OSAMU HAVE MY BABIES.jpg (730x611, 104K)

I had to browse normalfag sites for discussion since Yea Forums refused to talk about the series even while the anime was running
They were full of children complaining that the dude sucks and that his presence in the anime was pointless

Because you end up with Pokemon, where the protagonist is never allowed to win a season finale.

When was Gon ever said to be an underdog? Ever since the beginning people kept saying how special he was and how much potential he has

People complained because having an MC that's as exciting as a background character is boring, you mong. The only reason you like him is because you want to be an unique snowflake contrarian.

Is WT good? I read the first few chapters a while ago and enjoyed it but I hate reading ongoing stuff and I heard it goes on hiatus a lot and I read basically every other on-hiatus series already

>epilogue confirms that Soma is basically a pokemon protagonist
Holy shit

Attached: 1561450212506.jpg (640x934, 227K)

Attached: 98F04E84-FE01-4992-9D82-C8C517B493F1.jpg (800x1150, 486K)

It's gets better and I think it's worth the read, but if really hate ongoing stuff then you might not like the monthly pacing.

>Is WT good?
It got kicked off Jump and its now in some irrelevant monthly magazine

You're not wrong I used to dislike the guy too for being an annoying little shit at first
But when the complaints shifted from "he's too boring" to "he's too weak" I found myself disagreeing completely. The dude slowly won me over and I didn't even realize it

Attached: 80.jpg (725x657, 116K)

>tfw the majority of my favorite manga run in irrelevant monthly magazines
Feels good.

Attached: 1511355577095.jpg (1793x1920, 705K)

I mean, Gon is pretty much an underdog in the Phantom Troupe and Chimera Ant arcs. He would have zero chance in a fight against Chrollo or Meruem.

Your favorite manga can't compete in the Big Boys league. Cope.

Attached: Jump sales.jpg (769x272, 106K)

Because shonen anime are power fantasies for children

>tfw I don't care about magazine sales
>tfw I don't care about volume sales as long as the story gets a solid ending
Enjoy your numbers regardless, user.

Attached: feels good.png (727x690, 563K)

Not even the publishers are so autistic about numbers as salesfags.

Both Deku and Naruto are established to have the most potential of basically everyone very early in their series though.

Funnily enough he's an even more annoying piece of shit now than he was at the start, just in a different sense.

Attached: 165.jpg (784x1145, 376K)

Still shit they are the gary stu of shonen can win every fight with overpowered power

So they are like every other shonen character then

And asta is another underdog example he literaly still has no power even his anti magic not him but devil power he borrow

Attached: 09-44-20-f0hd1agsmnt01.png (1040x1040, 1.52M)

>Gon
>Underdog
???????????

Nope other shonen not even got power that powerfull like ofa and kyubii in first chapter and it pointless already they always win

They don't though

Shonen power creep means the MC needs to be OP to justify keeping them in the story. Look at Jobhan they had to asspull Ultimate just to keep in the final arc of Z and yet in the end Chadku won. Kishi came up Ashura and Indra to explain how Nardo n Sauce dont die to Rikudara. Deku has no skill so hes raw power to compete with competent heroes, and Gon literally used an asspull to beat Nefertipitou.

Chuu = middle in japanese, so chuunin is a mid ranking official.

And it pointless naruto is the strongest ninja and still genin

Shonen tards are really retarded, you can be an underdog in multiple senses rather than just "muh special powers".

He isn't

Who more retard the reader or the writer?

It was never established early on that Naruto had the most potential. It's only until the Great Ninja War Arc is where it's post explained.

>why is it so difficult for mangaka to write an underdog story without turning the protagonist into a secret übermensch?
>Kek still reading shonen
If you are americunt or old enough here in japan we can read seinen

Kakashi says in the first mission that Naruto and Sasuke have a lot of dormant chakra, with naruto having the most, even more than kakashi

Who more ponential baby with sealing kyuubi or your average ninja

Reader is a retard because they can't comprehend character writing or themes(which good shonen does have).

Writer is a retard for trying to write thematic stories for 12 year olds.

>Gon literally used an asspull to beat Nefertipitou.

Except it wasn't an asspull

>High Ranking
Mother fucker EBISU is a Jonin.
Mizuki is below EBISU
And even ignoring that
>Chunin

Why does he get less hentai?

Attached: 18ead72188b711bf37b43248dd898a84.jpg (842x1301, 520K)

>why act like an autist?

So he technically did beat a high ranker in 2 episodes huh?

but he was never disadvantaged, its not like he couldn't use Nen, or was shunned by his hometown.

Hunterfags huntertards, I don’t understand this gay shit series. The hunters wanted to kill the ant queen but couple minutes later they bring doctors to save the queen? NIGGA WHAT?! explain this plot hole!

who gets the most?

Gon's whole thing is that they build him up like Goku to start and then plop him into a world where everyone else is orders of magnitude more retardedly OP.

>strongest fighters in the world

Jojo always starts good then gets mediocre why can't Araki maintain the quality

>Black Clover good tier

Read World Trigger if you want a real underdog MC.

I watch HunterxHunter for the bromance

Read kinnikuman

Am I glad to see FMA in top-tier. Also King Bradley is based.

Because, as much as Yea Forums loves to deny this, underdog stories where the MC stays the underdog for most of the story are fucking boring as fuck.
