Hunter x Hunter is a gateway anime of the worst kind. It's a bad series, a clusterfuck of story and characterization that isn't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for its weaknesses by adding in excessive complexity and DARKNESS. The normal user can see this as the shit it is, and may enjoy it, hate it or be indifferent to it, but all the while recognizing that the series itself, regardless of their opinion, is plain bad.

However, these very aspects that try to smear over the shit of its core make it a breeding ground for aspie, unsociable underageb& faggots who engage in every kind of shitposting both in their own threads and in the rest of Yea Forums. The superpowered characters all asspulling their hardest to cheat death, the stand-like nen abilities, peculiar, colorful clothes, the whole Pitou faggotry and everything about the Hunter world fuels their escapist fantasies, while the chapter-long infodumps, lack of emphasis on art, and overall edginess of the series make it fit just right with the pseudo-intellectual drives of your average preteen and his sense of unwarranted self-importance towards the world. It has nothing to do with bloodlines at all, although it is true that being the son of Ging he is a nen prodigy, which is made clear from the beginning. It’s a combination of his emotional state, his nen restriction and vow, his immense quantity of aura, and his nen type being enhancement (as he forces his body to mature in the same way enhancement nen has been used to accelerate the body’s natural healing factor in techniques like holy chain). So no, not everybody can sacrifice themselves to go nuclear like that.

Two reasons why this works: Gon was a being that was still growing, and he sacrificed his potential to achieve his power. Pitou as an ant was already at her peak. He could definitely improve, but it wasn't going to be as drastic as a child becoming an adult. However, there is another reason why they didn't.
Pitou felt relief when she realized what technique was being used. From his perspective, using the same technique was basically either a) Gon kills me and then he dies or b) I use this to beat him and then I die. Either way, the King is safe and Pitou dies. Acceptable parameters.

Where does One Piece fit into this? I enjoy that series too and of course there’s some shit-flinging with other shounen, but it isn’t ruthlessly attacked to the same degree that HxH is. Is it because HxH’s less overtly whimsical attempt at maturity and thematics leaves it open to attacked for being edgy and pseudo-intellectual, narcissistic with a wicked sense of humor?
