If Griffith was keen on not allowing him to escape he could have ordered his guards to capture him in the palace's garden or have him executed on the spot.

Griffith is the worst and most evil villain I've ever come across in everything, print, media, anime, western, everything. That character was so well written I actually hate him. I feel legitimate feelings of anger and disgust at a fictional character. That's some of the highest praise I can give to the author in this instance really.
