Italy happens to be geographically optimal spot for bountiful vegetable, meat and spice availability.

Italys pizza/pasta/ice cream are way more fattening than jap food so you lose points on that.

I eat it was a part of my diet, it's very cheap and it fill me up without adding weight on me.
As for the taste, it is acquired taste. Once you;re used to natto, you can eat it with variety of sides to make it less boring.

Natto is like the only jap food I've seen where an anime character doesn't like it.

That's definitely true of Chinese and Italian in the US, but Jap food is played pretty straight. The only Americanized Japanese food I'm aware of is California rolls and Seattle style teriyaki.

So what does that taste like?

What? Almost everything you get in a US sushi restaurant is highly Americanized. Japanese sushi is extremely simple. The other stuff, like curry and ramen, usually aren't so much Americanized as just poor quality.

Your food is a mix of American, Spanish, and Chinese with some local adaptations. It would be weird if you couldn't get decent recipes out of that.

To be fair Italian cuisine is pretty non-threatening. Like, there's nothing flagrantly offensive in it. Some people would probably never eat octopus sushi just out of general principle. But I can't really think of an Italian dish that would put someone off like that. Italians just play it really safe, a bit boring if anything. But that's why people generally like their food.
