Asuka is a subversion of tsundere. Her hostility isn't an obstacle for the protagonist to overcome but instead something she sorts out between her and her mother, and the only thing Shinji ever does is jerk off over her unconscious body, completely oblivious to anything meaningful in Asula's life except the fact that he doesn't understand how to relate to her. He only views her as an interchangeable sex object, which is something the show and Asuka both call him out on. Her character lives for herself and her own issues and not for Shinji's dick.

Rei was SUPPOSED to be a subversion of the passive silent girl, taking all of those traits to their most extreme, being a literal disposable clone who dies shortly after gaining independence before being replaced by another one... this only backfired when it turns out tons of weebs actually did want a unactualized fuckdoll.

He's an insert for the audience and possibly Anno himself because their both Otakus with issues relating to people. The fact that almost all of Eva's fanbase idolizes characters that were supposed to point out the problem with their respective archetypes prove it was a completely accurate depiction.
