The more times i rewatch eva, the more i realize that this fag had no special problems at all and didnt even cry that much. He did all he was asked to do the best he could and did his task every time.
As a guy above mentioned, he only had trouble getting into robot three times, first of which is understandable (just got there to some big robot he doesnt know and father he has troubles with), second is his own decision (refuse to remain a pilot after being used by father again, change the mind once he realizes that peoples lives are at stake and fuck the dad), third is after sustaining a strongest shock so far in battle, and its eoe anyway, if he wouldnt act like a fag there somewhere in those 1.5 hours people would complain about missing essence or some shit.
So with age i came to dissociate with the shinji is a bitch meme. Almost every schoolboy shounen protagonist acts just as indecisive, only to cartoonishly yoosh his hands at the end and smash the villain. Here, when he does that once, he ends up almost dead. Rules dont apply, therefore no reason to act as if they do.
Ironically, after the few first episodes, by the time shinji accepts tokyo 3 as his home, he becomes one of the most stoic characters in the show all in all. Asuka is on the verge/in a mental breakdown for the most of the show, misato is escaping first to shinji, then to kaji, then into herself, gendo distanced himself from everything right till the very end just to meet yui once again but got cucked by rei, who isnt even human in all senses so her being mentally sound, if one can say that about a brick, doesn't count (just as kaworu), and ritsuko was following in her mothers footsteps in all senses. Did i forget someone? Maybe kaji but hes just a james bond, cool in life, cool in death.
And all that while shinji got in the robot and saved the day every damn time.
The most seemingly bitchy character is the one who holds everything and everyone together. All while everyone else bitch and reflect.

Why does he need to shut up? He barely even speaks up. When he does, he is interrupted by someone or something. No one takes a second glance at him. When shit hits the fan though, millions of people thrust his hopes onto him, and he does his best every time. I cant really expect out of that kid to not breakdown multiple times along the way.
