These threads are always filled with theories, from the autistic 10 page Miku theories to the 42 page Yotsuba theories. While all this autism is admittedly fun to watch, and sometimes to participate in, the truth is that they're not very accurate. I mean, sure, there's so many that simply by chance, someone has to be right. But if you really want to predict what will happen in the story, and really figure out who the winner will be, you have to take an entirely different perspective.

Characters are not people. They are fictional, they are fragments of the story and it does little good to try and guess what will happen in the story based on their behavior. Because the whole point of any narrative is to force characters outside of their comfort zones, outside of their usual behaviors. Negi knows exactly what he's doing. He's throwing vague hints that can lead in many different directions precisely because the ambiguity makes people argue about who's going to win, since there's no clear or obvious sign. People arguing = engagement, engagement = sales, sales = more Enkou for Negi. The story is designed, from bottom up, to be ambiguous and unclear, and anyone who says they have a surefire theory is simply delusional.

Trying to figuring out who the final winner will be from diegetic hints is idiotic. Comparing the hair or pose or whatever to the kisser is completely irrelevant, for all we know the kiss and the narration and the entire wedding could be a red herring. At least one of those things probably is, frankly. It would not surprise me if it turns out these were different quints doing all these different things.

Instead, if you want an educated guess at what will happen, look at the structure of the story and the beats of its plot. Think about which girl winning would allow Negi to milk the manga for as long as possible, and which girl winning would emphasize Fuutarou's internal conflict the most.

This can be considered a stretch but this may be possible.
The manga did not say it clearly, therefore it is free for interpretation. We are running on "hints" and pure assumption.

To me, that immediately precludes 1, 2, and 3. Not because they don't look like the kisser or whatever, but because their character arcs, as of chapter 91, are effectively over. They've come to terms with themselves, their motivations and goals. Them winning wouldn't incite any more drama in the story, beyond that quint being very happy.

In other words, each character starts believing a "lie" about themselves and about the world they inhabit. Ichika believes that she can win through deceit, she's moved past that. Nino wants to get rid of Fuutarou, she's moved past that. Miku thinks she's not good enough for Fuutarou, she's moved past that too. These characters have all concluded their arcs, and though they could certainly have a new one, one that coincides with Fuutarou finding his bride - the truth is that if the manga is truly within its last 30-50 chapters, then this is the third act and character motivations have been established by this point. It's too late for them to really grow beyond who they are now.

Yotsuba has a firmly established internal conflict now, one with no simple resolution and would almost certainly require Fuutarou's intervention. It's not too hard to envision a scenario where Fuutarou decides he loves her, but Yotsuba refuses to accept it, creating dramatic tension and leading to a sort of reverse-chase that makes up the final arc of the manga. It's also not too hard to see an arc where Yotsuba gets her stuff resolved independently. If we see the latter in, say, the next 10 to 15 chapters, almost no way 428 wins.

Itsuki, in terms of story presence, is complicated, because she's been built to be something of an audience surrogate. Her role is mostly to be a bystander that watches the conflicts play out, but its certainly possible for her to be the winner, if she has an arc that coincides with the story's conclusion. But, this late in the story, it would have to start almost immediately

Fuutarou is something of an empty slate. That's part of his design, he doesn't show too much emotion because if he did the winner would become obvious. That's why his concerns in the story aren't so much romantic as they revolve around friendship and family and etc.

That said, the winner has to be one that can generate an interesting final arc. Assuming that Negi wants a proper third act, and not just reveal the winner in the very last chapter, or leave the story with no clear winner - the winner needs to create some sort of conflict. Something that keeps them and Fuutarou apart. Which, again, kind of leaves out 1, 2, and 3. Because they're all at terms with their affection now, and Fuutarou is aware of them. Say, Nino. Fuutarou knows Nino likes him. If he realizes that he likes her too, he just confesses, they bang, story over. Boom. Miku and Ichika too, to a lesser extent. If, say, it was Yotsuba or Itsuki, you can imagine a scenario where neither party is open with their feelings for a variety of reasons, which leads to more tension.

This isn't a commentary on who's best girl or who "deserves" to win. I like Nino, and I feel she deserves to win because she's tried the hardest. But the truth is that from a storytelling point of view, from a writer's point of view, you have to maximize the amount of conflict in the story, and your romantic interest needs to create dramatic tension in the final act.

An arc isn't a character's story. An arc is a character's change in motivation. Nino's motivation is complete because she's moved past the lie she believed at the start of the story, and also because frankly, if the story is nearing its end, there isn't time for another Nino character arc.

Because the hints are intentionally designed to be vague? They're designed to mislead. Guessing how a story will go based on what the characters would do is stupid because characters aren't real people. They're devices that serve the purposes of the story. The story itself is paramount. The characters will bend and break every which way if it makes the story more dramatic. So it's more useful to break apart the structure of the story to understand what's going on. I mean, come on, this is like Creative Writing 101 stuff.

Again, these girls aren't real people. They're tools the story uses. If you want to understand what will happen, you have to look at the big picture - how does Negi make this story last as long as possible and develop a dramatic third act? Development and progression are not the same thing and you're mixing them up. Getting a good chunk of development may be necessary but I'd argue that progression isn't given that there're a lot of heroines that win as their character is revealed but not changed. That sort of mindset discludes anybody that's stalled up later rather than starting their progression earlier as well anyways and only really leaves Miku and Itsuki.

That's not a character arc. That's a character story. The character's story will last as long as the story itself does. The arc finishes when the character lets go of the lie they believe.

Let's be a little more technical. The structure of a character arc looks something like this. The character starts in a place of stasis, of happiness but also of delusion. He or she undergoes a variety of internal and external conflicts that force them to let go of that lie, and take some great big risk - which either succeeds or fails, and that leads them to "fulfillment." That doesn't mean they get what they wanted, but it means that they, as a person, has grown up and changed for the better.

Nino starts the story judgmental and cruel. Over time, she softens up to Fuutarou and learns to open her heart. She realizes that she loves him - she lets go of her lie - and in confessing to him she finds a place of fulfillment. She no longer has that lie.

This arc is closed. The best you could do is give her a new arc, but if, say, Fuutarou confesses back, Nino's new beliefs and motivations don't change. She's just really happy. That's not a character arc.

He more or less is. For all the "trope-breaking" and "subversion" you guys call him out on, 5toubun is a pretty typical romantic comedy with all the trappings of the genre. Pacing and character arcs are very typical and the midpoint of the series is extremely obvious - The Last Exam arc. Obviously I'm not saying Negi should or would follow genre convention to a T, but I am saying that studying the structure of the story is a more useful way to figure out the course of the story than digging for arcane hints which Negi places explicitly to make you guys argue. He wants as many contradictory and ambiguous hints as possible because that drives discussion. But if you look at the story structure, things become more clear.

We know who the freaking heroine is here too, the telltale signs are there, like they are in most series, and here as always people will debate it then accept it in hindsight later. I don't even consider it backpedaling when that happens, it's just that when the excitement is worn out at and the conclusion is set in stone, people are forced to admit the obvious thing they always knew.
I won't deny the existence of the exceptions, but they're exceptions for a reason. They break the rules and in most cases there's an evident reason. 5toubun on the other hand is a very traditional harem, a very well-told one, but its quality is what stands out about it, not its framing.

Actually, I would say that 5toubun has the distinction of NOT having a strong focus heroine. What really surprised me about Negi was how willing he was to embrace the genre. Usually, Harem manga are "Romantic comedies with a harem element," with a clear romance going on and a peanuts gallery of side girls for fans to buy merch of. The harem is secondary. Or they're completely comedic and have little development so that the harem is inconsequential.

Negi, more than any other mangaka I've seen, knows exactly what keeps fans engaged - waifu wars. 5toubun has more in common with the bachelor than Love Hina, the dramatic tension is in "Who will win," more than anything else, and he's very good at building suspense and making it unclear who would actually win, all while building an engaging story. At its core, the structure of 5toubun is not really a romantic comedy. It's more a family drama about five girls trying to figure out their lives. If you look at 5toubun as a romance, it absolutely fails. The main character has no real emotional B-plot, and frankly romance with any of the girls being the winner will inevitably feel underdeveloped due to the nature of the story. But that's fine, because this really isn't a traditional romance manga. Negi has embraced the dog race of harem manga, but he's classy about it.

I don't think the story has a main heroine. There is no heroine that the MC's own "lie" revolves around - and that is usually the signifier. In Nisekoi, MC was obsessed with finding the "real" heroine, so Chitoge winning makes sense - her being "fake" is a reflection and an antithesis to the MC that created conflict. There's no such obvious connection in 5toubun, so I would not consider anyone the main Heroine.

In most cases a quint's involvement in a growth is the subject to large debate. In Itsuki's case, Negi makes a point to immediately show us the effect of her influence on him. He flashes back to her when defining his relationship with the five during the fireworks, admits his mistake on the immediate next page and then tries to fix it during midterms, opens up the next chapter in the hospital, declares them friends during eggs and most recently referenced her directly when he changed his motivations to finding their dreams. The actual consequence of these changes is debatable, I'll give you that, and I think a strong argument can be made for every quint's effect on Fuutarou, but the framing for Itsuki is completely different since we're forced to accept it in no uncertain terms.

I'll amend my earlier statement though. There is a second arc where Itsuki has no chapter, that is Fuutarou's date with Yotsuba in addition to Yotsuba's flashback, but otherwise the arcs in this manga are clearly labelled for us by sharing a name and being given numbering. With the exception of the, each shorter Yotsuba centric arcs, Itsuki always receives a chapter where she features almost exclusively as a fact. There're arcs where a quint will get more predominant focus than another but every other quint has multiple arcs where they don't receive focus. I'm willing to concede that there's an argument for Yotsuba because she's the only one that actually gets exclusive arcs but I think that's a separate debate entirely.

Then there's plenty of great manga authors and editors who've said the same thing. The SMAC editors go into detail about the same ideas in manga.

Well, it's how John Gardner and William Goldman and Truby and McKee and Sorkin and every writer and every screenwriter I've seen and read and met describe it, so I'll take their word over yours. I mean, they've got charts, and you haven't. Gotta have charts, man.

I don't have any specific predictions for the next chapter, or the next two chapters or the next ten. I don't know how much longer the manga will last, for sure - though from what I hear from these threads Negi said something about ending it in 40 chapters or so, I don't have sauce though. I expect it to go on for another few months to a year, judging by the state of the story, so 30 to 50 chapters probably.

All I can say for sure is that the longer the story, the better the chances for 123, because it gives them room for another arc. The shorter we have left, the better 45 chances become.
