Because the 2011 version is poorly directed and Togashi had good ideas and dropped the ball on them. Events in the anime tend to end in a quite anti climatic fashion. The Hunter Exams doesnt feel like this dangerous, rigorous exam in the 2011 version.

they glossed over lots of minute development which makes it harder really get a feel for, what 2011 did in like 20 eps, 99 paced out and created a really nice ride along the way. like an actual story.

It was clearly said in the last HA ep that Gon is satisfied w/returning Hisoka's badge & they're no longer interested in staying. They achieved their goal & were ready to move on, making the story more realistic. Your mistake is expecting it to go the typical shonen way even if staying would be meaningless & out of character for them. You want bad writing just to see more fights.

The MC achieve his goal in the 1st ep by the last arc so the anime does have a conclusion. Even Togashi said he could've easily ended it in that arc. But there was still so much story to tell and it would've been a waste to end it so soon.

It's really enjoyable and it has incredible variety for a shonen. Different arcs feel like completely different shows so you're compelled to see what happens next. I also like how Gon subverts the typical "MC is totally clueless about sex and relations with women meme."

I recommend 2011 fans to read this. You'll learn a lot about the value of directing. It's a good read. I personally couldn't care less about the which version is better.

In terms of visual directing in Heavens Arena arc, 99 blows 2011 right out the fucking water. It's not even close. Animation is arguably better as well. Nippon put so much effort into Heavens Arena arc

I bought into the meme & watched it. The good directing is only present in a few good moments in the 1999 anime and not enough to endure the shitty animation which makes up like 95% of the show.

Every arc somewhat reinvents the entire vibe of the show, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse. At its best, it's one of my favorite anime ever, but it's not always at its best.

Hunter x Hunter is really unique. Haven't seen any other anime switch themes like it.

Want a battle tournament anime? Heavens Arena arc
Want a thriller? York New City arc
Want an online video game story? Greed Island arc
Want a war drama w/monster creatures? Chimera Ant arc
Want politics? Election arc

This goes for the entire show from Trick Tower until mid Greed Island.
That's just not true, there are a few bad supervisors in the rotation which is true of almost all shonen from that era, but the animators were consistently putting out good work throughout. Not to mention the backgrounds, storyboarders, etc who were even more impressive. The new anime is more on-model, but it rarely hits any notable highs for its entire first half.

A few? There's plenty of moments. HxH 99 for the most part doesn't have shitty animation. Heck, 2011 cuts corners like crazy.

It's not hard to cherry pick. Yeah, it's a weekly show, you're not going to get the animation of a Ghibli film. For a weekly show, it has frequent, consistently good animation. Still leaps and bounds better than the new anime was, and most non-seasonal shows today for that matter.
