The point is: You watch harem for the girls, as the MC is hardly ever decent or anything more than a way for viewers to imagine it's them, so in turn the relationship aspect is also bad, since you can't have a well developed relationship when one of the characters is practically a blank slate (not to mention, MC getting together with the girl or girls is the endgame, so to stretch the story they make the MC dense as a black hole as a way to avoid progress which is annoying and destroys the relationship aspect)
Thus, cutting the bland MC that drags the show down makes it at least somewhat better

What changed the shounen demographic is Saint Seiya. Captain Tsubasa started a shift on sport shounen but with Saint Seiya, girls started to buy shounen in mass and they never left. During the 90's, shounen titles were full of bishie teams and homoerotic rivalries while shoujo was very diversified during the 90s but at the late 90's, early 2000s, the editors decided to play safe with by following the formula of Itazura na Kiss and Hana Yori Dango, easy to mass produce and with a safe audience. Eventually the males left shoujo, even the girls started to look more for shounen and read shoujo only when they were in the mood for dreamy rapists and shounen basically absorved the shoujo demographic.
