Was the Rei in the helicopter Gendo leaves in after visiting his wife's grave a ghost? I thought it was just Rei in the vehicle coming to pick him up and more evidence to Shinji that Gendo liked Rei more than him.

I watched Eva and EoE forever ago and have watched it a few times since. I know why Rei appears at the beginning, I just never realized that the Rei in the VTOL thing was a ghost and not the real Rei.

Ok, so the general fanwank is that Rei gained the ability to time travel once she became Lilith again, as she was essentially a god with powers over time, space, and human souls. That explains how Misato and a few other characters who died before Third Impact entered Instrumentality anyways (and why Rei ghosts appeared at the instant of their deaths).

The Rei ghosts that appeared in the series itself then are Rei as Lilith going all the way back to the beginning, and watching over Shinji as the events of the series unfold. That's the fanwank anyways.

That's more likely the result of time loops, recurrence, and reincarnation, which has been hinted at in the Rebuild movies as well. They were billed as a reboot of Evangelion, but all indications point to them being stealth sequels. Plus Sadamoto wrote an epilogue to his manga after the actual "time skip" ending, which brought Mari from the Rebuilds into his manga's canon.

There's also some of the side materials and short films that Khara has produced for the Japan Animation Expo, which while apparently not canon, explicitly position the Rebuilds as a continuation of NGE.

Was it, or did Shinji merely dream that he was there? That counts for both the TV ending and EoE. It's actually very ambiguous whether Shinji is imagining some characters or not- for example, in EoE the Asuka that Shinji choked may have not been real (and her harshness/coldness towards Shinji was a reflection of how Shinji felt about himself). That's the common explanation for why he choked Asuka on the beach- he thought he was still in his dream, and didn't know that she was real.

Isn't the implication that she's omnipresent? She's both everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

This, it's not so much time travel as user above said, as it is Rei becoming omnipresent, existing across all time and space even to before she rejoined with Lilith.

I thought that is what put her in the hospital but other anons say its because she tried to commit suicide in the show.

this is what I figured. She was seeing the past for shinji to see.

The Asuka at the End of Eva is real. She was able to see her self as an individual and thus become herself again leaving instrumentality. She like Shinji got out of the lcl and ended up on the beach. Saw that Shinji built a grave for everyone and knocked over the grave Shinji made for her. Asuka layed down next to Shinji. Shinji who has been alone long enough that the grave he made for Misato has begun to rust. Turns his head to see Asuka as well as floating Rei freaks out and strangles Asuka she reaches out touches him and Shinji starts to cry and stops trying to strangle her.

she tried to commit suicide after the mind rape. NERV agents find her emaciated and nearly dead in the bathtub of a ruined house. its ambiguous if she slit her wrists or was just waiting to starve to death but thats what put her in hospital

It wasn't the mind rape it was not being able to pilot the eva and then finding out Kaji was dead.
