Just rewatched some of the episodes on Netflix, and I'm surprised that I'm finding myself related more to Misato, Ritsuko, and older characters in the show than Shinji (which is the character I primary related to back when I first watched it when I was 15).

Some of the Netflix episode title translations have been really butchered (ep22 is now “Staying Human” instead of “At Least Be Humane”) but I have to applaud them for being the first translation to come up with something decent for ep9: “Mind Matching Moment”. In the past I’ve seen everything from “Momentarily Unite The Minds” to “A Heart Once More in an Instant”.

You've seen all these themes and archetypes beaten to death already, so it will probably bore you. I don't think you'll appreciate the references to the older monster of the week tokusatsu and giant robot series.

Grew up on watching the ADV dub. The ADV dub of the series is better overall, but I honestly don't think the Netflix dub is as awful as everyone says. Sure the "first children" shit is pretty bad, but a lot of the minor characters don't sound quite as horrible and some aspects of the translation make more sense. The acting just sounds really clunky since they're reading a literal translation rather than an adaptation into more natural sounding english. That said, I can honestly say the movie localizations are better than they've ever been, and that's not saying much. Glad they did away with the forced swearing and looney tunes sound effects.

I think it's more important to hear and understand the flow of conversation than focus on individual performances if both performances are adequate, with one exception and that is if there hasn't been a dub for multiple seasons or iterations of a project and 1 seiyuu was used for a character to the point where you identify that Seiyuu as that character.

It wasn't ever as bad with most other foreign movies and the like because european languages are all based on each other. French is especially easy because about 40% of English vocabulary is literally French with different pronunciations, it uses a Germanic syntax though.

Japanese media gaining popularity in the west was a new frontier where the language was so different from English that you couldn't just do a literal translation. No other foreign media has gained that level of popularity where you'd have to basically find a generation of actors who based their entire careers on dubbing that media, it started in the 90's and was notoriously bad but by the mid 2000's the actors had gotten enough experience that they'd start doing alright.

You might have to actually watch it to understand exactly how little of that is hyperbole, particularly the "absolutely no silence for even half a second" part

Low IQ post, good subtitles aren't supposed to read like a dub script. Good scripts do often sound natural and have a good flow, but written language is not spoken. Read dialogue in a book and you'll see what I mean.

Subs are only better if the dub is completely awful and changes the meaning behind the intended performances so that a sub is the ONLY option you have to digest the plot other than devoting years to learning a new language to a level where you're able to hold conversations in it (reading a foreign language is much much easier than understanding someone speaking it in a normal conversation)

Speaking as someone who's watched anime dubbed, subbed well and badly and then after learning Japanese at a conversational level where I can watch movies in Japanese and (at least in English) summarise, critique, analyze, etc, your position is 99% theoretical. There's been some freakshow rare cases of people who've been like XXY or something but no SRY gene and they've been able to get pregnant and give birth.

That's pretty much the separation of male to female.. SRY gene = male, no SRY gene = female. There's not really an "intersex" there's some genetic anomalies that may result in a person being male but with female secondary characteristics (XXY with an SRY gene but the 2 X chromosomes affect phenotype to where they develop breasts and don't undergo normal male puberty, but they're still biologically male), but the primary characteristic of what gametes you produce.. that's decided by 1 gene.
