It's cruel and harsh because they won't be tiptoeing around the bullshit that they normally hide from one another, while still asking to not be ditched anyway. Let's say the bullshit here is Hikki tells Yui that she has absolutely no chance with him. Pre-genuine, Yui might walk away, or Yukino might hate him for it or whatever. At the genuine level, he wants neither Yui nor Yukino to ditch him just because he said something that hurts their feelings. Apply equivalently to whatever bullshit Yui or Yukino has to say.

If Yui finds genuine between her and Yukino, regardless of which of them wins the Hikki, they'll still be friends with each other. It's entirely possible that Yui might drop because she says she doesn't want genuine, but Yukino and/or Hikki can also force genuine on her by saying they don't want her to leave.
