I never even got to the apparently-edgy/suffering part [which probably still isn't very good since he's not that good at suffering in his other manga] because the early stuff was so boring and nobody was interesting.

This is so bizarre I half-suspect it was intentional, like they wanted to have all the toe-edges pointing in the direction the two are facing, anatomy be damned. It's just too weird that Illya's would be correct in the middle.

The beautiful thing about it is how at the end everything suddenly makes sense what you found boring and uninteresting in the beginning. Literally nothing was placed without reason.
What I experienced with this Manga is that at the beginning it is just some casual stuff, pretty meh overall, short bursts of good plots. But towards the end you go more and more back to the first chapters to check stuff and slowly get blown away.
After all,Tomoki enjoyed his peaceful life. But he does not realize he did not have one for over 10 years. Really, all he wishes for is a peaceful life with his childhood friend.
