For those who don't know, Urobuchi is a fan of wuxia. It might be part of the reason why he got hooked unto the puppet shows in the first place. This interview (4gamer.net/games/130/G013023/20110617067/) has him praising Jin Yong, Gu Long and Liang Yusheng's works. The vids you linked are adaptations of Jin Yong's novels.

does he know chinese or there's translations? i didn't see him mention it. years ago i tried to look for japanese translations of xianxia webnovels but didn't see any. i didn't look for the wuxia classics instead wanted to read recent xianxia stuff. i feel he does know chinese because otherwise how did he get hooked on pili stuff? i saw there's some officially translated stuff but not much. maybe i was looking in the wrong place, but i tried my best. it shouldn't feel like a difficult task to look for a community for this stuff if it exists so i have my doubts.

wanting to watch budaixi and reading wuxia/xianxia is my 1# motivation for learning chinese. i really like urobuchi for having such patrician taste and giving me thunderbolt fantasy to boost my motivation

I think some Pili shows were dubbed into Japanese a long time ago. You can find snippets on youtube.

I don't know if the butcher knows chinese or not, but the major wuxia works by the big 3 authors have official japanese releases. Condor Heroes comic book adaptation even got official nip releases.

Recently watched this garbage because I've ran out of worthwhile stuff to waste my time on and I absolutely liked the first season. Second season was fucking terrible by comparison, though. Fight choreography was better, but the effects were somehow worse and less ambitious. Story and characters were offensively bad. Probably the blandest and most laughable antagonists I've seen in a long time.

I agree. Still, the choreography and puppetry in general was so much improved that it saved it. It's actually surprising how some of the movements in s1 seems so much worse in comparison on a rewatch. Hopefully s3 gives us a cast as good as the first's.

Are there character design sheets (like artbook scans or something) or high res pictures of the dolls available anywhere? I just started watching this show and the costumes are so detailed I want to take a better look at them. Didn't find much with google.

Scheming nerd and monk boy come off as literal filler. They are by no means good enough to be main antagonists. The support cast was terrible as well. A mute who plays a cheesy guitar, really? Can you have any less personailty?

I like it more when the designer and craftsman create female puppet with visible boobs

I also really disliked Bard, especially since he was so stoic when the puppets rely so much on emotive physical gestures since they're, you know, largely immobile puppets. But I think a big part of why he was so unappealing was he spent most of the season shackled to Sho, the guy he's such good friends with that even when they come to blows they quickly get over it and it amounts to pointless tension. When he paired off with Duck to find the antidote he was able to play off of him and be more entertaining.

the only time Bard is entertaining is when he's being played like a damn fiddle

I mean it's not like Betsu ten Gay was any better. He hardly did anything besides killing Phoenix which was basically asking for it.

He's a likable schemer who also had the power to back up his goals. Due to the way he was characterized and depicted, he actually came off as a legitimate threat until ep12. The first sesaons support cast, and the way the journey was structured, also happens to be significantly more engaging and interesting. The reveal that the two protagonists are borderline unkillable killed a lot of season 2's tension. Especially since many character actions didn't make any sense. The problems already start during ep1, when the guy who administers the fortress thinks it's a smart idea to threaten the person who has collected 35 mythical, god killing swords. I expect a bit more foresight from some 80 year old in charge of a military facility

It's a guy who's spent those 80 years getting used to being hot shit, especially when it comes to expertise on mystical weapons. Some pride bordering on hubris is to be expected.

But, apparently, he had access to 3 mythical swords as well so he should be aware of their power. At the end he even states that the 3 he held in his possession are incredibly dangerous. If some random traveler accumulated 35 of them, he should realize just how insane of a number that is. Being cocky or prideful is one thing, and being convinced of your defenses is fair, but threatening someone who has 35 swords at their disposal comes off as him begging to be killed. How did he think those 35 swords were gathered? Through pick pocketing peasants?

The main antagonist of both seasons is Rinsetsua though and he got sufficiently rekt in both.
