I don't understand when people say Aikatsu needs more plot and drama. The entire appeal of Aikatsu, at least to me, is the fact that its so cheerful and happy and low conflict. No other show can put a smile on my face like Aikatsu and I absolutely love seeing these cute girls being happy working towards their dreams without lots of drama. There still is drama, but its always pretty light and has a happy resolution.
Don't get me wrong, I love stuff like Pretty Rhythm and Shining Star and I definitely want those kinds of shows to exist, but turning Aikatsu into that isn't the answer. Aikatsu's lack of plot and drama is what makes it special in the first place.

If we take the KingPri performances out of the equation, the June-Rinne duet is the ultimate apex of not only just what Pretty Rhythm but all of idol/sports anime could accomplish: absolutely spellbinding visuals combined with two clashing yet harmonious voices and breathtaking dance moves, not to mention some really groundbreaking lore that still maintains its relevance even to date.

And that's something Aikatsu can never replicate unless the anime can manage to break free from having to faithfully reproduce the game's performances with the added limitation of one special appeal per performance unlike the three you can do in the game. Since every performance plays out the same way (with even the special appeals being the same when they're big, gimmick ones like the Sun Dress special appeal or the Miracle appeal), there's no way for the viewer to appreciate any difference in quality between various performances in a competition and you have to just take their word for it, even if you feel the winning one had worse song and dance than the other, leading to "[x] got robbed" sentiments. Meanwhile in RL there was never a question about who deserved to win a competition since the performances were wildly different and could have varying amount of jumps of varying complexity, and they could also fail. OG Aikatsu did weakly try to shake up the formula a couple times, but Mizuki being able to do more than one special appeal consecutively got dropped and failing a special appeal during a performance (something that can easily happen all the time in the game) only happened once with Sumire at the very end.

I love Sevendays Love Sevendays Friend as much as any other RLfag, but Platonic Sword is something else entirely.
Like it's calm and intense at the same time, it's omnious, the song has that nice Mitsuki Saiga's overlap, the choreography is top notch and Prism Axel is the most impressive shit, between gathering the sparkle and exploding into seven simultainous jumps.
I also absolutely loved how they brought Wataru's jump in 3D.

The gist of it was that Sumire bit off more than she could chew by going for a ultra high grade special appeal that was beyond her current level; prior to that she never failed any of her previous appeals. A on-stage mistake like Sumire's fall was extremely rare in Ogkatsu at that time; said mishaps were more prominent back in Ogkatsu S1 when they wanted to go with some 'darker' tones which never really caught on, as the following two and a half seasons can testify.

She failed a Fever Appeal. They half-assed its explanation in the anime since they couldn't follow the game's rules to the letter. I'll try to go over how it works by memory even though I haven't played the OG S4-era game since then so I might be wrong on the details.
A Fever Appeal is an extra appeal you can perform at the end of a performance if the fever gauge (the gauge that monitors the audience's reaction which used to appear above the character in the anime and which they gradually phased out during Stars) got maxed out. In the game, each song is divided in three sections (beginning, middle and end), and depending on how many notes you hit in each section, you get the chance to perform a special appeal at the end of each, meaning you can perform up to three special appeals in a single performance. Special appeals require their own timed minigames to complete and will fail if you don't complete those. By performing well and successfully doing all three special appeals, the Fever Gauge would be maxed out by the end of the performance and you'd get the chance to perform the Fever Appeal as a fourth, extra appeal. That can also fail if you fail the reaction commands, and that's what Sumire failed in the anime (while Akari succeeded). Of course the anime didn't show all three previous special appeals and gave a more generic explanation to the Fever Appeal, but the mere fact that Sumire was able to try it means she could've accomplished it by game rules.

The one factor that really drives home how...ethereal and amazing (understatement for sure) SLSF was and still is (let's take Platonic Sword out of the equation for a bit) is the in-universe audience's reaction to it all. Forget the absolutely breathtaking CG/dance/voices, the god-tier Prism Jump sequences and the mind-breaking lore exposition that comes right after, what really sells it is that everyone, from Happy Rain to Bell Rose and the future OTR just...stop in their tracks and remain transfixed with wide mouths and open eyes at the inhuman spectacle that is occurring right before their very eyes. Hijiri's reaction is the best of them all as well, as this screenshot can testify.

More specifically, Yamaguchi (the Koharu fan) was to blame. Asahi was less of a joke in earlier episodes, and you can tell that Kakihara meant to set up AsaKoha as a serious ship with how sweet their interactions were in the Broadway Dream episode. Yamaguchi doesn't treat the M4 as serious characters and sees them more as comic relief, or outright ignores them (the only drama episode where they didn't have speaking roles was written by him iirc). Remember Subaru and Kanata watching Yume at the airport at the end of the second season's New Years episode? Yamaguchi confirmed that Itou, the episode's director, added that in (along with a few other scenes).
So two(?) episodes after the Broadway episode was the Halloween episode, written by Yamaguchi. That was when AsaKoha first started to turn into a joke. I don't remember how many more episodes after that in s1 centered on Koharu, but most of the Koharu-centered episodes in s2 were written by Yamaguchi, who made Asahi a comic relief whenever he showed up, and the other writers just followed suit.
