According to the rules of a gag manga, there must be a bounch of annoyng character to keep going with the gags. And in Uruseiyatsura there are a couple of damn good annoyng character.
Jariten instead is pure SHIT is a pile of fucking annoyng crap, good for nothing, clueless, useless. I cant understand why thakahashi keepo going with him for so long. Its like you know, the annoyng dog of you girlfriend, you hate him so much and you hope he dies any time soon but you must keep a smile because of her.

Oshii build up a rivalry between them for their "final" battle at episodes 105 and 106. Started with the clip episode of Mendou trying to figure it out why Lum pick Ataru instead of him, later with Mendou inviting Ataru to his weapon basement as a pissing contest at episode 100 (the only episode Lum didn't appear or was mentioned. Trolling or implying Mendou's crush on Lum is more about his rivalry with Ataru? Maybe both). Mendou was butthurt since Cherry told him that Ataru was more stubborn and more gutsy than him when it matter in the clip episode. Oshii knew he was leaving so it's not farfetched he wanted to leave with a bang
