It's a pretty big taboo in japan.Most anime with this theme take it in a more comedic way.

Then what is something someone who enjoyed this might like?

ReLife and Anohana
One is about a jobless guy that is offered a pill to decrease his age so he can go to school and redo his life
The other is about a hikikomori teen that sees the ghost of his childhood friend,story is about him coming to terms with her death and going back to society

There was no other anime like NHK. That show saved my ass. For all those in need, give it a try.

It's just embarassing really,there's alot to learn from this type of anime in your first watch but afterwards it's just sad and embarassing.
Also take a look at the pic.The only girl there is a girl that is deus ex machina inserted to be the MC's partnet from the get go.If this anime wanted to go even deaped it should have removed her in the first place.
But it would be boring at that point i guess

Seconding this. The Tatami Galaxy is quite a bit different from NHK and yet I always find myself mentally grouping them together. They have a number of themes in common, even if the presentation and tone can be far apart. And they're both top tier animes in my book.

The light novel is way more hardcore than the anime so you might want to give it a shot.

Genshiken probably the most similar. Very comfy, realistic SOL, but not as melodramatic.

Later seasons relies too much on relationship drama bullshit though
